A man and his dog died in a Caldwell County house fire on Tuesday.
Shortly before 4 a.m., the Grace Chapel Fire Department was called to a home at 5486 Valley Run Street for a fire, Grace Chapel Fire Chief Travis Davenport said in a news release.
While fighting the flames, firefighters located a 77-year-old man in the home. Firefighters removed the man from the home. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Davenport said.
The fire also claimed the life of a dog. The man’s wife was able to escape the home, Caldwell County Public Information Officer Paige Counts said via email.
The fire started in the den of the home. The Caldwell County Fire Marshal’s Office deemed the fire accidental, Counts said.
The home was heavily damaged, Counts said.
