Other benefits and drawbacks: The card offers some insurance protections, including purchase protection, travel accident insurance and worldwide car rental insurance. You also don’t have to worry about foreign transaction fees.

You can use the funds to pay for Costco purchases, or you can request cash back, but you need to do it in person at a Costco warehouse.

The card doesn’t offer promotional financing.

We looked at a range of store credit cards to determine the best fit for a variety of online and in-store shoppers. While we focused primarily on open-loop cards you can use anywhere, we also included some closed-loop cards that offer standout rewards, discounts or other benefits for loyal customers.

We based our picks on several factors, including earning rates, as well as other benefits like free shipping, promotional financing and redemption flexibility.

How to Get a Store Credit Card Instantly

Most store credit cards offer instant approval, meaning you’ll typically get a decision on an online application within 60 seconds of submitting it. If you’re looking for instant approval, simply shop for the card that best fits your spending habits and apply. There are some caveats, however:

  • Instant approval doesn’t mean guaranteed approval. While many store credit cards—particularly closed-loop cards—often have lower credit score requirements, the card issuer may still deny your application if your credit history or income doesn’t meet its minimum criteria.
  • Instant approval doesn’t mean instant use. Some major card issuers allow you to get access to your card number before you get the physical card in the mail. But with many store credit cards, you’ll generally need to wait a week or two to get a physical card you can use.
  • Not all decisions are immediate. If approved or denied, you may get the decision within seconds. But, in some cases, the card issuer may require additional information or underwriting. In this case, it could take two to four weeks to complete a manual review process and give you a decision.

What Are the Easiest Department Store Credit Cards To Get?

No department store credit cards offer guaranteed approval. But if your credit is in poor shape, and you’re looking for a store card to help you establish a positive payment history, closed-loop cards you can only use with the retailer tend to be easier to get than open-loop cards you can use with a wider variety of merchants.

Benefits of Using Instant Approval Store Credit Cards

Store credit cards can come with several perks, which can be particularly beneficial if you spend a lot with a single retailer.

In addition to great rewards or discounts on your purchases with the co-branded retailer—often more than what you might earn with a standard rewards credit card—you may also enjoy other benefits, such as free shipping, promotional financing and exclusive savings and offers.

Remember, though, that many store credit cards limit where you can use them, and redemption options may be inflexible. If you have great credit and want to earn rewards on a range of purchases, you may consider one of the best rewards credit cards.

Bottom Line

An instant approval store credit card can be a good fit if you spend a lot with a specific retailer. As you consider your options, look at your spending habits to get an idea of where your money goes. Once you’ve determined your needs, research and compare card features to determine whether a store card is a good fit for you.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What store credit cards give you instant access?

Some store credit cards may offer instant access to your card number or allow you to create virtual card numbers to shop online before you get your physical card in the mail. Some examples include:

  1. Capital One Walmart Rewards® Mastercard®* (virtual card number)
  2. Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi* (request a temporary card at your local Costco warehouse)
  3. Target RedCard™ Credit Card* (added to your account)
  4. Bloomingdale’s American Express® Card* (method not disclosed)
  5. eBay Mastercard (added to your account)

What store credit cards have instant approval for no credit?

It is possible for store credit cards—particularly closed-loop options—to be accessible to consumers with no credit history. But while they’ll typically offer instant approval if you apply online, none offer guaranteed approval.

What store cards can I pre-qualify for?

Some store card issuers allow you to get pre-qualified before you submit an official application. The pre-qualification process can give you an idea of your approval odds without impacting your credit score.

Some store cards that offer this feature include the Capital One Walmart Rewards® Mastercard®*, MyLowe’s Rewards Credit Card*, Key Rewards Visa* and Kohl’s Card*. Additionally, other store card issuers may send you a preapproval offer in the mail, which indicates a good chance of approval.
