Washington, D.C.-based George Washington University Hospital, part of King of Prussia, Pa.-based Universal Health Services, is laying off "less than 3%" of its employees due to the restructuring in an effort to reduce cost and increase operational efficiency.
"We are making every effort to support impacted employees, including transitioning the majority to other currently open positions or providing eligible employees with a separation package," a spokesperson for George Washington University Hospital said in a statement shared with Becker's.
News of the layoffs comes just after Amarillo-based Northwest Texas Healthcare System, also part of UHS, shared plans to lay off a "limited number of positions" also because of restructuring efforts.
"All impacted employees have been valued members of our team, and we are treating them with dignity and respect during this difficult time," Jason Barrett, CEO of Northwest Texas Healthcare System, said in a statement shared with Becker's.
Like Northwest Texas Healthcare System, most of the George Washington University Hospital layoffs do not directly involve the patient care delivery front line, the statement said.
Both statements shared with Becker's pointed to a "challenging time in the healthcare industry" for the restructuring.
A 385-bed tertiary care academic medical center, the George Washington University Hospital comprises 2,600 healthcare workers including 170 physicians, according to their website.
