Practically free trees
The Tennessee Environmental Council will hold its annual Tennessee Tree Day on March 16, but you need to reserve by March 4. The mass planting, the largest of its kind in the U.S., is expected to add more than 100,000 native trees across the state. Selections may be reserved for pickup at five locations in Hamilton County, as well as Bledsoe, Bradley, Grundy, Marion, McMinn, Meigs, Polk, Rhea and Sequatchie counties and even Dade County in Georgia. The 15 options include persimmon, tulip poplar and three varieties of oak. You'll pay about $2 for each bare-root seedling. The order form is at tectn.org.
