Fallon Elks chili cook-off March 16

Fallon Elks No. 2239 will host their third annual chili cook-off on Saturday, March 16 at 93 W. Center St., in Fallon. Doors open at 10 a.m. and judging will begin at noon.

Guests are encouraged to bring a minimum of two quarts of homemade chili. Donations will be accepted. All proceeds will be donated to New Frontier.

Home and Garden Show

The 23rd annual Soroptimist Home and Garden Show is April 13-14 at the Fallon Convention Center.

Vendors include home improvement, home décor, garden décor, jewelry, plants, clothing, photography, real estate, metal art, crafts, telecommunications, food truck, community nonprofit, 4-H, a bounce house and more.

Great Basin Bull Sale

The Great Basin Bull Sale returns to the Rafter 3C Arena in mid-February with four days of events of interest to any rancher, breeder, dog-lover or general livestock enthusiast.

The Great Basin Bull Sale on Feb. 17 begins at 1 p.m. at the Rafter 3C Arena with the where discerning bull buyers can select from a large selection of performance-tested and range bulls for purchase.

Need to use age-advantaged bulls or high-efficiency genetics? Both will be available. The bull sale event is also free to attend.

Other events precede the bull sale. Come down to the Rafter 3C Arena on Feb. 14 and 15 to watch skilled working stock dogs compete with their handlers in the Mountain States Stock Dog Association dog trials, to kick off the week’s events. Start time is 7:30 a.m. each day and admission to the stands is free.

The Fallon Ranch Hand Rodeo hosts a hot iron branding event on Feb. 16 at 8 a.m. Watch teams of men, women and families compete for a check in the lifestyle competition. This event is free to attend.

Join us and the Rusty Canteen bar for a social hour in the arena on Feb. 16 at 4 p.m. Follow that with the Great Basin Bull Sale tri-tip dinner served at 5:30 p.m. Finish the night with dancing and a performance featuring country music singer Chad Bushnell, who was recently awarded “Modern Country Song of the Year” at the Josie Music Awards.

Tickets for the dinner and dance are $30 for adults and $15 for children 12 and under and must be purchased in advance online or with cash at the Community Activities/Parks & Recreation Office, 325 Sheckler Road, weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.


Fiddler on the Roof tickets

Performing Arts of Churchill County presents the all-ages community musical “Fiddler on the Roof” March 1, 2, 7, 8 and 9 at 7 p.m. with a 1 p.m. matinee March 2.

All performances will be held at the Churchill County High School Theatre.

Advance tickets may be purchased for $20 from paccnv.org beginning Jan. 19 at 8 a.m. Tickets will also be available for $20 at the door as seating allows.

PACC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization promoting the arts culture in Fallon and Churchill County. The community is invited to participate in the PACC program as a performer, technician, volunteer or audience member.

Spielberg to perform in Fallon

A long-time elite member of the prestigious Steinway Artist Roster, Robin Spielberg has a half billion streams of her music across the globe. Her newest album (her 24th studio recording) is “Downtown.”

Spielberg will be performing Fallon on Feb. 17 at the Barkley Theater.

Spielberg’s performance at the Barkley Theater begins at 7 p.m. The box office, Art Bar and galleries open at 6 p.m. Tickers are members $17, non-members $20 and youth and students with valid student identification, $10.

Lahontan Valley Fine Arts Invitational

The Churchill Arts Council’s 11th biennial Lahontan Valley Fine Arts Invitational runs to Feb. 23.

This event is the largest invitational yet, with more than 50 pieces on display created by local artists .

Artists include Trista Dorman, Jackson Moon, Jaime Sammons, Kevin Sammons, Suzie Slaybaugh, Denise Johnson, Edith Isidoro Mills, Kathleen Williams Miller, Ocean Riddle, Michelle Nelsen, Kim Rowlett, Vanessa Burch Urquhart, Linda Hammond, Reid Sewell, Diane Sewell, Mary Darby, Lori Bishop, Jeanne Evatt, Marie Nygren, Loretta Burden, Larry Neel, Tedd McDonald, Diane Hansen, Claudia Hutchings, Casey Thorpe, Randy Summers, Jeannine Summers, Sheree Jensen, Ellen Brandfonbrener, Nettie Rickerson, Kim Lamb, Julie Lamb and Rico Lutao.

The exhibit showcases a wide range of media, including sculpture, photography, textiles, and paintings. All of the art is available for purchase.


Free radon kits

The University of Nevada, Reno Extension’s Nevada Radon Education program is offering free short-term radon test kits to Nevadans through Feb. 29, while supplies last.

Radon test kits are available statewide at Extension offices including the Fallon office on Sheckler Road and partner locations. A list can be found at https://extension.unr.edu/radon/test-kit-locations.aspx.

Extension, in collaboration with the EPA, encourages all Nevadans to test their residences, schools, day cares, and all buildings for radon.


His Inspirations Valentines coupons

The expiration date for discount certificates offered in conjunction with book sales and author signings at His Inspirations on Small Business Saturday have been extended until Valentine’s Day.

Legacies of the Silver State: Nevada Goes to War is a book about World War II veterans with Nevada ties. The book was written by Nevada News Group journalists Ken Beaton, David C. Henley and Steve Ranson. Proceeds are given to Honor Flight Nevada.


Youth baseball signups

Fallon Youth Baseball signups have begun and will be open until Feb. 23

The program includes T-ball, Rookies, Minors, Majors and Babe Ruth. Coaches are also needed.

A skills drat for Minors and Majors is Feb. 24. Opening day is March 23.

Pennington Life Center

Stop by the Pennington Life Center in February for the many activities planned for the month.

Cards, crafts, exercise, games, dressing up for Super Bowl and Mardi Gras, discussion on voting, welfare representative available to answer questions, Medicare representative and computer assistance are just a few of the activities and resources available at the Pennington Life Center in February. Plenty of good eats at the Pennington Life Center: All are welcome to partake. Lunch served 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. weekdays. Cost is $6 for those under age 60 and a suggested donation of $3 for those 60 and older.


Rotary Club of Fallon

Rotary meets every Tuesday at noon at the Stockman’s Steakhouse. Each meeting usually has a speaker. Guests are welcome.


Churchill County Library

See what the Churchill County Library is offering in February and dive into a variety of events and programming. The library will be closed Feb. 19 to observe Presidents Day.

NRCS financial and technical assistance

The U.S Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is offering financial and technical assistance to help agricultural producers apply conservation practices through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) and the Agricultural Management Assistance Program (AMA).

Approximately $17 million is available to producers through EQIP and AMA.

Applications for EQIP and AMA must be received by the local field office before 4 p.m. on March 29. Any applications received after the March 29 deadline will be considered for funding during the next funding cycle. Eligibility for applications will be determined by April 26, and money will be obligated by June 14.
