Featuring the newest classical recordings from around the world, including the Atom String Quartet's latest album, which features four new pieces by the musicians, Sol Gabetta's latest album, and new music from Alessandra Toni.
Universum
This album features four string quartets, each composed by a different member of the Atom String Quartet. "Atomizations" by Dawid Lubowicz talk about the vastness of the universe, are a reflection on the infinity of events, a story about a road that always surprises and never ends. "Varsovia" - Mateusz Smoczyński is a musical record of the heroism of Warsaw and the pain of its inhabitants, interwoven with images of the bustling metropolis of the times. "Bolero" by Michał Zaborski tells about dance, passion and love, while "Atlas of Butterflies" by Krzysztof Lenczowski is a musical illustration of a children's book with drawings and descriptions of butterflies.
Classic and typical of the Atom String Quartet, there is of course a core of chamber music and string ensemble playing, but there is a lot of extended techniques and improvisation along the way.
Mendelssohn
This album was recorded at the famous new Philharmonie de Paris and it’s the latest from famous touring and performing cellist, Sol Gabetta. It’s a double CD that features Felix Mendelssohn’s complete works for cello and piano, and a selection of contemporary works that have been written for this album by composers Wolfgang Rihm, Heinz Holliger, Francisco Coll and Jörg Widman, all of which were inspired by Mendelssohn’s Lied ohne Worte, Op. 109.
The Best Chapter
Alessandra Toni is an Italian pianist, composer, and performer of neoclassical and crossover music and this is her debut album. True to the neoclassical/crossover world, her music is simple, but impactful. “Every composition is a compelling speech of emotions that transcend words. The opening notes often serve as an introduction, akin to an attention-grabbing opening statement in a speech.“
Reflet
This is an album celebrating French music, with music by Berlioz, Duparc, Debussy, Ravel, and more. “Reflet conjures up the nuances and transparencies of French melodies. There is in reflection the idea of an echo, the shadow of a disquieting double, of a plural, diffracted sparkle... A clash of deceptive mirages, a kaleidoscope of senses and flashes of light, it interweaves in strange parallels the score of our lives, adorned with gold and illusions", writes Sandrine Piau. This is her 14th album with the Alpha Classics label…!
