Robins sorry for celebrating in ball boy's face; O'Neil: 'disgusting' behaviour

Coventry City manager Mark Robins has apologised to a Wolverhampton Wanderers ball boy for celebrating in front of him in an act Wolves boss Gary O’Neil labelled “disgusting.”

Robins celebrated in front of the teenage ball boy when Haji Wright netted a dramatic winner 10 minutes into stoppage time at Molineux to take Coventry into a Wembley semi-final with a 3-2 victory.

Robins had been irked by the ball boy dropping the ball earlier in a exhilarating stoppage-time period in which Coventry fought back from 2-1 down to win 3-2.

“I have an apology to make because before that (winning goal) happened, a ball boy had the ball in his hand,” said Robins.

“He dropped the ball and walked away, smiling. It really annoyed me, but he's a kid, you know. At the end of the day I've reacted.

“We scored the goal and I've gone and celebrated in front of him. So I'm apologising to him.

"I do not show emotion very often, but I did today, and that's what the FA Cup does to you. But I apologise unreservedly to him.”

Wolves fear Neto out for rest of the season

Wolverhampton Wanderers fear they may have lost Pedro Neto for the remainder of the season.

Neto, 24, missed eight games earlier this season with a hamstring issue and Gary O'Neil has revealed an injury to the other could now rule the Portugal international out for much of — if not all of — the team's run-in.

“With Pedro, that is potentially the end of the season for him," the manager said after Saturday's defeat to Coventry City in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

“It’s very similar to the injury that he suffered on the other hamstring.

“There is a chance that he gets back for the last couple of games, maybe, if it goes really well."

However, there is better news for Matheus Cunha (hamstring), Jeanricner Bellegarde (knee) and Craig Dawson (groin) who could all return after the international break.

Hwang Hee-chan is on track in his own recovery from a hamstring issue and is expected back in five weeks.

Haji Wright hailed Coventry City's belief after the USMNT forward scored a 100th-minute winner to eliminate Premier League Wolverhampton Wanderers from the FA Cup.

Coventry had trailed 2-1 at Molineux heading into second-half stoppage time after two late goals from Rayan Ait-Nouri and Hugo Bueno had overturned Ellis Simms' opener.

But the visitors staged a late comeback of their own, with Simms levelling the scores in the 97th minute before Wright struck on the stroke of full-time to secure a 3-2 victory and an FA Cup semi-final spot.

"I said it many times before, we've a lot of quality in our side," Wright told ITV Sport. "And as long as we believe and keep trying and I think we'll get our chances. And today we were able to take three of them, and it's enough for the win.

"It's amazing to make it to Wembley on such an occasion and such a game. It's great fun for all of us. Hopefully we can enjoy it and then get back to work."

Brentford have been handed a huge boost with Bryan Mbeumo back on the bench for their match at Burnley today.

The Cameroon international, 24, has been sidelined since early December with an ankle injury picked up in the defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Ideally he is not needed, of course, with Manchester United coming up following the international break.

Thomas Frank's sit 12 points ahead of their hosts at kick-off but only five clear of the bottom three.

Injured Awoniyi out for Forest at Luton

Injured Awoniyi out for Forest at Luton

Nottingham Forest’s preparations for their final 10 games of the season have been disrupted by a fresh injury to striker Taiwo Awoniyi.

Awoniyi will not be involved in Saturday afternoon's game at Luton Town that pits 17th-placed Forest against the team directly below them in the Premier League table.

Initial tests have indicated the 26-year-old is likely to miss a number of other matches.

Forest are three points ahead of Luton but expect to hear on Monday whether will face a points dedication for breaching the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules.

Awoniyi, who has already missed a chunk of the season with injury, has been named in Nigeria’s squad for their forthcoming games against Ghana and Mali but is expected to be withdrawn.

Gravenberch available to face Man Utd, Konate set to miss out

Gravenberch available to face Man Utd, Konate set to miss out

Ryan Gravenberch is back in contention for Liverpool’s FA Cup quarter-final against Manchester United on Sunday — but Ibrahima Konate looks set to miss the trip to Old Trafford.

Netherlands midfielder Gravenberch has sat out of the past five matches after damaging ankle ligaments during last month’s Carabao Cup final triumph over Chelsea, while Konate picked up a muscle problem in last week’s Europa League clash with Sparta Prague.

“Ryan trained again today so he’s ready,” Klopp said.

“Ibou didn’t train today. We will have to see whether he can train tomorrow. It will be a tight race (for Sunday) that we will probably lose.”

Young midfielder Bobby Clark went off in discomfort during Thursday’s 6-1 thrashing of Sparta but fears that he’s facing a spell on the sidelines have been allayed.

Klopp added: “Bobby feels much better. It was uncomfortable after getting a knock with a little swelling which led to the feeling there might be something more serious but he’s fine.”

Aurelien Tchouameni will start in central defence against Osasuna with Nacho Fernandez out.

The France international is joined in the back four with the returning Dani Carvajal, who was rested last time out in the win over Celta Vigo.

Thibaut Courtois, Eder Militao and David Alaba are all still missing with injuries while Jude Bellingham is serving the second of a two-game suspension for his red card against Valencia.

Joselu is also absent with gastroenteritis. Vinicius Junior and Rodrigo start up front.

Carlo Ancelotti's side start the day seven points clear of second-placed Girona in La Liga. They will have a chance to respond away at Getafe later on this evening.

Breaking down the Champions League quarter-final draw

The Champions League quarter-final draw is complete — and there is no shortage of intrigue.

From the winners of the last two seasons (Manchester City and Real Madrid) being paired against each other to Harry Kane returning to north London to face Arsenal, or one-half of the draw opening up for one of the less-fancied teams in the last eight (something unlikely to ever happen again given the format changes from next season), the sub-plots are fascinating.

The Athletic assembled an expert panel to cast their eyes over the four ties to explain where they will be decided, who they are tipping to go through and which team they are expecting to lift the trophy at Wembley on June 1.

Al Hilal have won 28 games in a row – but is it really a world record?

Al Hilal have won 28 games in a row – but is it really a world record?

Yasser Bakhsh/Getty Images

Saudi Arabian football club Al Hilal have won 28 matches in a row — a 1-1 draw against Damac on September 21, 2023 was the last time they failed to claim victory.

Al Hilal, whose top scorer this season is former Newcastle United and Fulham forward Aleksandar Mitrovic, sent out a press release on Tuesday following their latest victory announcing they had broken the world record for the most games won in a row by a football club.

Their 28th consecutive victory, they said, took them past Welsh top-flight club The New Saints’ run of 27 wins in a row during the 2016-17 season.

Guinness World Records — the long-standing reference book and website that lists and collates world records in a variety of different fields — have approved Al Hilal’s winning streak as a world record.

So have the Saudi Arabian side really achieved something that no club in more than 150 years of competitive football has ever done before? Are there any other sides who claim to have been on longer winning streaks than this? Is it even the longest winning run in the sport right now?

The Athletic attempts to answer this and clear up any confusion.

Pochettino organises barbecue to help young side settle

Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino admits some of his players are finding it difficult to handle the expectations of playing for such a big club.

Pochettino’s squad is now one of the youngest in the Premier League after a huge overhaul of the squad since the Todd Boehly-Clearlake consortium took over in 2022.

A reminder of just how many changes there has been in a short time will come on Sunday in their FA Cup Quarter Final against Leicester City. Out of the current group, only Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva and Reece James were in the squad which lost to the same opponents in the final three years ago (Trevoh Chalobah was on loan at Lorient).

Pochettino, who revealed some of the team struggled to sleep before the Carabao Cup final loss to Liverpool last month, said: “One thing we cannot change is to give time to the players to get experience and be more mature.

“You ask me about Cole Palmer — not all the players have the same process in settling at the club or to perform. We are in a process that of course the main group, the main young players…they struggle a little bit to deal with the pressure to play for Chelsea. That is the thing we are of course aware of and we are focusing on trying to help them in all the areas.”

FSG working to hire Benfica technical director Marques

Liverpool owner Fenway Sports Group (FSG) is working on a move for Benfica technical director Pedro Marques in the latest step to build its new structure after the arrival of Michael Edwards.

FSG last week announced Edwards’ appointment to the CEO of football role, which includes taking overall charge of Liverpool’s sporting set-up.

A key part of his job will be to help acquire and oversee a second club, with the 44-year-old calling it “one of the biggest factors in my decision”. Edwards added: “I believe that to remain competitive, investment and expansion of the current football portfolio is necessary.”

FSG is targeting Marques largely to provide his skills and expertise on such a project. The highly-regarded Portuguese would be employed by the Boston-based company rather than Liverpool.

Marques’ vast experience in this area would be utilised to assist FSG in its search and then subsequent management of another team, which will mainly be used to attract global talent.

Struijk may need season-ending surgery on groin injury

Struijk may need season-ending surgery on groin injury

Leeds United defender Pascal Struijk may need to undergo season-ending surgery on his groin injury, Daniel Farke has confirmed.

The 24-year-old hasn’t played since the 2-1 defeat to Preston on Boxing Day with the groin issue keeping him sidelined for the last three months.

The Leeds manager confirmed that the defender is yet to return to training and may need to undergo a medical procedure on the issue that will see him miss the remainder of the season.

Farke said: “With Pascal Struijk, some bad news, progress to come back into team training was not possible. It’s a bit complicated situation with him – he’s got a cartilage injury and there are always two ways to treat this injury.

“Either you go for surgery, if we do this he’s out for the season, or the conservative route and go for injection therapy. The doctors hoped this would be beneficial for him.

“We had to go this route, the cartilage needs some healing, it has progressed but the next 10 days will be decisive.”

Postecoglou dismisses ‘tourist’ supporter claims

Spurs head coach Ange Postecoglou has hit back at the idea irregular visitors to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium are “plastic” or “tourist” supporters.

The makeup of the home crowd has been a talking point over the last week, after Spurs announced a 6 per cent increase in season ticket prices and tighter controls around senior concessions. It has led to accusations that Tottenham would prefer to have a more transient crowd as irregular visitors are more likely to spend more when attending matches.

But Postecoglou forcefully argued that to brand those who can only go to games from time to time was extremely unfair.

“That’s really harsh — and I’ll tell you why,” he said. “Because I’m probably ‘plastic’ and ‘touristy’ because I was coming from the other side of the world really passionate about football and if I could get access to see a Premier League game that was the world to me.

”So to label people ‘plastic’ or ‘tourists’ I don’t think that’s fair just because people live on the other side of the world. This football club has supporters all over the world. It has supporters all over the UK who don’t always get access to the games and I think we should always be able to accommodate them.

“It doesn’t make them any less passionate and really disrespectful to call fans who are willing to go to the expense of coming halfway round the world. You don’t know how passionate they are about their football club. Maybe they have only started supporting it in the last two years — but that doesn’t diminish who they are.”

What now, Graham Potter?

What now, Graham Potter?

Laurence Griffiths/Getty Images

When Premier League managers get sacked, they tend to stay quiet for a while before entering a TV studio or appearing on a podcast, as if to remind us all they still exist.

Frequently in these situations, they note how being dismissed will make them a better manager in the long run, while veering away from throwing shade at the players who contributed to their downfall or the higher-ups who wielded the axe.

It is a path followed by most in the business at some stage, including Jose Mourinho, Mauricio Pochettino and, more recently, Jesse Marsch.

You could argue their motive is to put themselves back into the shop window for owners and chairmen getting itchy feet about their club’s current manager or head coach.

Graham Potter, however, opted for a different route.

Mount included in Man Utd squad for Liverpool FA Cup tie

Mason Mount is set to be included in Manchester United’s squad for Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final with Liverpool.

The England international, 25, has been sidelined with a long-term calf problem and last played for the club in November in the 1-0 Premier League victory over Luton Town.

Mount joined United from Chelsea in a deal worth £60million ($76.7m) in July but has made just 12 appearances for Erik ten Hag’s side.

United confirmed on Tuesday that Mount had returned to training ahead of the game at Old Trafford with Ten Hag revealing on Friday that it was “looking good” for him to be part of the matchday squad after a positive week of training.

Ten Hag’s side are still without defenders Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia as well as striker Anthony Martial due to injuries.

Fellow absentees Harry Maguire, Rasmus Hojlund and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, though, are in line to return against Liverpool.

Forest expect to discover PSR fate on Monday

Nottingham Forest are expecting to discover their profit and sustainability (PSR) fate on Monday.

A hearing to decide on what punishment the club will face for breaching PSR regulations was held last week, on Thursday and Friday.

Forest play relegation rivals Luton Town on Saturday, while facing the prospect of a potential points deduction. Luton currently sit three points behind them and occupy the final relegation spot in 18th place.

It was believed that an announcement would come within seven days of the hearing.

But it is now expected that the possibility of Forest potentially dropping into the bottom three before kick-off — because of any points deduction — will be avoided.

It remains unclear exactly what punishment Forest will receive for the breaches — which came during their first season back in the top flight, in 2022-23 — but they will have until April 15 to decide whether they wish to appeal the verdict reached by a three-person independent panel.
