FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) - Family and friends are mourning the loss of 16-year-old, Ethan Monshaugen. The sophomore at Moorhead High School died unexpectedly of a spontaneous aortic dissection earlier this week.

Jenna Askvig is Ethan’s mom. She says she would tell her oldest son, ethan how much she loved him every day.

“I always told Ethan, ‘You hold a special place in my heart that nobody else can have,’” adding, “Your first born, it’s something that your life is changed forever, and that’s the first time that I believe anybody experiences true, unconditional love.”

Ethan had a way of making other people feel special and cared for and he took especially good care of his younger siblings.

His sister, Quinn, says, “Whenever I’d get home he’d go, ‘Oh great you’re here,’ and I would kinda like it.”

His 12-year-old brother, Cam, says, “We would always play hockey outside or play knee hockey down in the basement.”

His 14-year-old brother, Nolan, says, “I’m going to miss how caring Ethan was. He would always text me after my hockey games.”

His parents say they’ve always been proud of how ethan treated those around him.

“Everybody has a little story about Ethan, about how he always has a smile on his face, he was always willing to help out he was always going out of his way to make somebody’s day better,” says his dad, Cory Monshaugen.

It seems everyone who met Ethan had a reason to love him and he could make anyone feel like family.

“Instantly we kind of hit it off and he kind of brought me in with the family. I’ve always had a special relationship with him,” says his step-dad, Marcus Askvig.

Ethan was close to his family, but he also had close friends through playing golf and being the manager of the Moorhead hockey team.

“He doesn’t want us to sit and be sad all day, he wants us to try and live a legacy for him and keep his legacy alive, it’s just a huge part of what we’re trying to do,” says his fellow team manager, Graden.

The hockey team is raising money to assist with the costs of funeral and memorial services.
