With $2.32 billion at the worldwide box office, 'Avatar: The Way of Water' is the third highest grossing film in history, behind only 'Avengers: Endgame' and 'Avatar'.

Few would dare to say that the film is riddled with errors or that it was a failure, but it is James Cameron himself who has pointed out some of the negative aspects. Now, he wants to clarify them.

Matt Damon reveals James Cameron offered him 10% of Avatar to star in the movie

Despite his extensive experience in the world of cinema, James Cameron set an all-too-surprising target when talking about the box office of 'Avatar 2'. The director stated that, in order to make a profit, the Na'vi sequel had to catch 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens', which reached a whopping $2.069 billion.

James Cameron's confession about his mistake

Now, Cameron admits that wasn't entirely accurate.

"I was a bit inaccurate with that. It probably has to be the tenth highest-grossing film in history to recoup the investment", he confessed as per Espinof.

This means that, in order for Cameron to recover the investment and make a profit, it would be 'enough' for him to make $1.515 billion, which is to say, to surpass the seventh instalment of 'Fast & Furious', which was the tribute to the late Paul Walker and which rounds out the list of the 10 highest grossing films of all time.

Cameron is now counting down the days until 'Avatar 3' hits cinemas around the world, which will happen on December 19, 2025. This is a unique opportunity for Cameron, who could have four of the five highest-grossing films in history if the third instalment manages to follow in the footsteps of the previous two.
