Illinois Supreme Court justices Thursday questioned whether two lawyers should receive nearly $1.7 million in attorneys’ fees, despite violating ethics rules before getting fired.
An Illinois circuit court awarded lawyers Andrew Levenfeld and Stephen Schlegel the fees for representing Maureen V. O’Brien and her nephew Daniel O’Brien III, who both sought the lawyers’ help to acquire a share of their family’s fortune. They fired the two lawyers, who agreed to work on a contingency basis, after 19 months.
