A 26-year-old Connecticut man is dead after being shot outside Waterbury Superior Court on Thursday, authorities said.
The attack came as the victim was exiting the courthouse after attending court proceedings that morning, according to NBC News Connecticut.
The suspected shooter reportedly fled the scene on a motorcycle prior to law enforcement arriving.
At around 11:40 a.m., police found the victim in critical condition and transported him to a nearby hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries, according to the Waterbury Police Department.
Lt. Ryan Bessette said that the identity of the victim will not be released until after an autopsy is conducted.
The shooting is believed to have been an isolated incident and there is no continued threat to the surrounding Waterbury community, Bessette said, adding a motive for the attack is currently unknown.
“This is an active investigation and there is no additional information at this time,” police said in a press release sent out Thursday afternoon.
Patricia Hickey, who works as a paralegal at Mellon Hickey Capuano on State Street, near where the incident occurred, said she heard two loud bangs and initially thought it was construction noise, reported CT Insider.
“It sounded like a dump truck,” she said, but added she later heard screams coming from a woman who was with the victim.
The Kaloidis Law Firm, who claims the victim was one of their clients, addressed the incident on Facebook.
“We are deeply saddened by the senseless act of violence this morning outside Waterbury Superior Court. Our client was the victim of this horrific targeted shooting. We pray for him and his family,” the firm wrote Thursday afternoon.
Detectives from the Waterbury Police Department’s Major Crimes division are investigating the incident as a homicide, and are still searching for the armed suspect.
