Police: Knife-wielding man fatally shot by Port Orange officer
NEWS ON CW 18 STARTS NOW. TONIGHT, A PORT ORANGE POLICE OFFICER IS ON PAID LEAVE AFTER SHOOTING AND KILLING A MAN OUTSIDE OF HIS HOME. OFFICERS RESPONDED TO THE CALL OF A SUICIDAL MAN THIS AFTERNOON. WESH 2’S GAIL PASCHALL-BROWN IS LIVE AT POLICE HEADQUARTERS AND GAIL. THE CHIEF SAYS THAT THE MAN CHARGED AT ONE OF THEIR OFFICERS WITH A KNIFE. YES, INDEED. AND ALSO RIGHT NOW THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF LAW ENFORCEMENT IS INVESTIGATING THIS CASE. THAT’S STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES. NOW, NEIGHBORS WE SPOKE WITH, INCLUDING THOSE WHO ACTUALLY SAW WHAT HAPPENED, ARE IN SHOCK. THEY SAY THIS WAS A NICE GUY. HE HAD LIVED IN THE HOUSE 25 YEARS PLUS, BUT HE LOST HIS MOTHER RECENTLY. NEIGHBORS LIT A CANDLE BY THE HOUSE WHERE ONE OF THEIR NEIGHBORS WAS SHOT, AND KILLED BY PORT ORANGE POLICE TUESDAY. RICHARD RAYNOR, WHO LIVES NEXT DOOR, SAYS HE SAW IT ALL COMING OUT WITH A KNIFE, YOU KNOW, AND THE COP SAID, STOP, STOP, STOP. AND HE DIDN’T PUT THE KNIFE DOWN AND HE SHOT HIM. JUST BEFORE 1 P.M., PORT ORANGE POLICE RESPONDED TO THIS HOUSE ON SHANDON COURT. THE CALL CAME IN AS A SUICIDAL MAN. POLICE SAY THE MAN CHARGED AT ONE OF THE OFFICERS WITH A KNIFE. THE OFFICER GAVE HIM SEVERAL VERBAL COMMANDS TO DROP THE WEAPON, WHICH HE REFUSED TO DO, AT WHICH POINT THE OFFICER DISCHARGED HIS FIREARM, STRIKING THE INDIVIDUAL. ALL THE OFFICERS BEGAN LIFE SAVING PROCEDURES, BUT THE MAN DIED AT THE SCENE. HIS NAME IS NOT BEING RELEASED PENDING NOTIFICATION OF KIN. NO OFFICERS WERE HURT. SHOCK. THE SHOCK. I JUST DON’T UNDERSTAND. I DON’T EITHER, I DON’T UNDERSTAND. HE WAS A NICE GUY, HIS MOM PASSING AWAY. I’M SURE HAD A LOT TO DO WITH PASSED AWAY IN THAT ABOUT THREE WEEKS AGO, RIGHT? YEAH, THREE WEEKS AGO TODAY. WEDNESDAY WASN’T REALLY TODAY. IT WAS THREE WEEKS TODAY. WEDNESDAY. TODAY. IT’S JUST, YOU KNOW, I GET IT. THE GUY HAD A KNIFE, I GET IT, HE’S HE’S HARMLESS. AND WHY COULDN’T LAW ENFORCEMENT USE A TASER OR TO TAKE HIM DOWN THREE SHOTS I DON’T I DON’T FAULT THE OFFICERS. I THINK I THINK THEY DID WHAT THEY COULD AND THEY REACTED APPROPRIATELY. THE POLICE CHIEF SAYS THE PORT ORANGE OFFICER WHO FIRED HIS WEAPON IS A YOUNGER OFFICER WHO’S BEEN WITH THE DEPARTMENT FOR MORE THAN TWO YEARS. Police: Knife-wielding man fatally shot by Port Orange officer
Port Orange police said an armed person was fatally shot by an officer Tuesday. Neighbors lit a candle by the house where one of their neighbors was shot and killed by Port Orange Police Tuesday.Police said they responded to the 5900 block of Jandon Court around 1 p.m. "Earlier today, shortly before 1 p.m., we received a call (referencing) a suicidal male on the 5900 block of Jandon Court," Port Orange Police Chief Manuel Marino said.According to police, when officers arrived, a knife-wielding man charged at them. One officer fired their weapon. "The subject suddenly emerged and charged at one of the officers and was in fact armed with a knife. The officer gave him several verbal commands to drop the knife, which he refused to do at which point the officer discharged his firearm striking the individual," Marino said. Police said the armed man, who has not been identified, was struck and later died.His name is not being released pending next of kin notification.No one else was hurt. Neighbors we spoke to, including some who saw what happened, are in shock.They say the man lived at the address for more than 25 years and was a nice guy but he lost his mother recently.Richard Raynor, who lives next door, says he saw it all."He was coming out with the knife, you know, the cop said, ‘Stop, stop, stop and he didn't put the knife down and he shot him,” Raynor said."Shock," Raynor said."I don't understand," neighbor Maureen Rappisi said."I don't understand it either,” Raynor said."His mom passing away I'm sure had a lot to do with it," Rappisi said.WESH 2’s Gail Paschall-Brown asked, “About three weeks ago, right?"“Three weeks ago today. Wednesday," Raynor said. "Was it really today, three weeks today? It's just, I get it. The guy had a knife. He's harmless. Why couldn't law enforcement use a Taser to take him down? Three shots?" Rappisi said.“I don't fault the officers. I think they did what they could and they acted appropriately," neighbor William Moore said. According to police, the officer who fired their weapon is on paid administrative leave while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates. The police chief says the Port Orange officer who fired his weapon is a younger officer who's been with the department for more than two years."We have turned this investigation over to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement per our policy and procedure. And also, the involved officer has also been placed on administrative leave. That's also according to policy," Marino said. “If you know someone who needs help, reach out. Port Orange police said an armed person was fatally shot by an officer Tuesday.

Neighbors lit a candle by the house where one of their neighbors was shot and killed by Port Orange Police Tuesday.

Police said they responded to the 5900 block of Jandon Court around 1 p.m.

"Earlier today, shortly before 1 p.m., we received a call (referencing) a suicidal male on the 5900 block of Jandon Court," Port Orange Police Chief Manuel Marino said.

According to police, when officers arrived, a knife-wielding man charged at them. One officer fired their weapon.

Neighbors we spoke to, including some who saw what happened, are in shock.

They say the man lived at the address for more than 25 years and was a nice guy but he lost his mother recently.

Richard Raynor, who lives next door, says he saw it all.

"He was coming out with the knife, you know, the cop said, ‘Stop, stop, stop and he didn't put the knife down and he shot him,” Raynor said.

"Shock," Raynor said.

"I don't understand," neighbor Maureen Rappisi said.

"I don't understand it either,” Raynor said.

"His mom passing away I'm sure had a lot to do with it," Rappisi said.

WESH 2’s Gail Paschall-Brown asked, “About three weeks ago, right?"

"We have turned this investigation over to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement per our policy and procedure. And also, the involved officer has also been placed on administrative leave. That's also according to policy," Marino said.
