Port Orange police said an armed person was fatally shot by an officer Tuesday. Neighbors lit a candle by the house where one of their neighbors was shot and killed by Port Orange Police Tuesday.Police said they responded to the 5900 block of Jandon Court around 1 p.m. "Earlier today, shortly before 1 p.m., we received a call (referencing) a suicidal male on the 5900 block of Jandon Court," Port Orange Police Chief Manuel Marino said.According to police, when officers arrived, a knife-wielding man charged at them. One officer fired their weapon. "The subject suddenly emerged and charged at one of the officers and was in fact armed with a knife. The officer gave him several verbal commands to drop the knife, which he refused to do at which point the officer discharged his firearm striking the individual," Marino said. Police said the armed man, who has not been identified, was struck and later died.His name is not being released pending next of kin notification.No one else was hurt. Neighbors we spoke to, including some who saw what happened, are in shock.They say the man lived at the address for more than 25 years and was a nice guy but he lost his mother recently.Richard Raynor, who lives next door, says he saw it all."He was coming out with the knife, you know, the cop said, ‘Stop, stop, stop and he didn't put the knife down and he shot him,” Raynor said."Shock," Raynor said."I don't understand," neighbor Maureen Rappisi said."I don't understand it either,” Raynor said."His mom passing away I'm sure had a lot to do with it," Rappisi said.WESH 2’s Gail Paschall-Brown asked, “About three weeks ago, right?"“Three weeks ago today. Wednesday," Raynor said. "Was it really today, three weeks today? It's just, I get it. The guy had a knife. He's harmless. Why couldn't law enforcement use a Taser to take him down? Three shots?" Rappisi said.“I don't fault the officers. I think they did what they could and they acted appropriately," neighbor William Moore said. According to police, the officer who fired their weapon is on paid administrative leave while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates. The police chief says the Port Orange officer who fired his weapon is a younger officer who's been with the department for more than two years."We have turned this investigation over to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement per our policy and procedure. And also, the involved officer has also been placed on administrative leave. That's also according to policy," Marino said. “If you know someone who needs help, reach out. VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Port Orange police said an armed person was fatally shot by an officer Tuesday.
Neighbors lit a candle by the house where one of their neighbors was shot and killed by Port Orange Police Tuesday.
Police said they responded to the 5900 block of Jandon Court around 1 p.m.
"Earlier today, shortly before 1 p.m., we received a call (referencing) a suicidal male on the 5900 block of Jandon Court," Port Orange Police Chief Manuel Marino said.
According to police, when officers arrived, a knife-wielding man charged at them. One officer fired their weapon.
"The subject suddenly emerged and charged at one of the officers and was in fact armed with a knife. The officer gave him several verbal commands to drop the knife, which he refused to do at which point the officer discharged his firearm striking the individual," Marino said.
Police said the armed man, who has not been identified, was struck and later died.
His name is not being released pending next of kin notification.
No one else was hurt.
Neighbors we spoke to, including some who saw what happened, are in shock.
They say the man lived at the address for more than 25 years and was a nice guy but he lost his mother recently.
Richard Raynor, who lives next door, says he saw it all.
"He was coming out with the knife, you know, the cop said, ‘Stop, stop, stop and he didn't put the knife down and he shot him,” Raynor said.
"Shock," Raynor said.
"I don't understand," neighbor Maureen Rappisi said.
"I don't understand it either,” Raynor said.
"His mom passing away I'm sure had a lot to do with it," Rappisi said.
WESH 2’s Gail Paschall-Brown asked, “About three weeks ago, right?"
