OAKLAND — A 76-year-old Pittsburgh resident was killed Saturday morning after the truck he was driving crashed into an overpass in West Oakland, authorities said.

The man was identified by the coroner’s office Monday as Jose Deandrade Filho.

The incident occurred at 10:26 a.m. Saturday in the 3500 block of West Street.

Police say a Volvo D16 three-axle truck was traveling northbound on West Street with its hydraulic roll-off bed in the elevated position. Roll-off beds are mechanically operated platforms that can be raised or lowered, such as a tow truck bed.

As the truck was traveling northbound, the elevated roll-off bed portion struck the I-580 overpass at 35th and West Street.

Deandrade Filho, who authorities said did not appear to be wearing his seatbelt, was thrown partially through the front windshield of the truck by the impact. No other vehicles were involved in the collision.

He was pronounced dead at the crash site.

It’s not known if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash. The incident is still under investigation and anyone with information is asked to contact police traffic investigators at 510-777-8570.
