HOMOSASSA, Fla. — A man was arrested after an anonymous complaint was made to animal control that he was fighting roosters.

Citrus County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested Jorge Lopez Abril, 51, with third-degree felony bait/breed/sell or using any animal to fight on March 6, according to a Facebook Post from the sheriff's office.

Deputies searched Abril's property on South Gross Avenue in Homosassa and found several bottles of antibiotics and testosterone for roosters, deputies said.

The arrest report said there were caged roosters with cuts on them and a screened-in "training area."

When questioned, Abril admitted to selling and shipping roosters to Puerto Rico and Ohio. A total of 26 adult chickens and 10 chicks were taken and transported to the Citrus County Animal Shelter for care.

He was booked into the county jail and posted a $2,500 bond.

Abril could face up to five years in prison and a maximum fine of $5,000 if convicted.
