What led to the double technical between Duquesne and BYU Fousseyni Drame pumped his fist and waved his arms toward a crowd already buzzing. This was the energy he wanted to bring.
The Duquesne grad student wouldn’t say the sequence that led to a double technical foul was premeditated during the NCAA tournament opener Thursday against BYU. But it didn’t necessarily just happen either.
A game of physical collisions reached a crescendo early in the second half when the 6-foot-7 Drame went up to rebound a missed shot alongside BYU 6-11 senior Noah Waterman. The two battled for the ball before twisting to the floor. Drame leaned an elbow into Waterman, who responded in kind as officials and coaches rushed to break up the mini skirmish.
“I’m glad it was me as being one of the oldest guys on the team that I set an example,” Drame said. “What I was thinking since the first play: I had to make something (happen) to send a message.”
Waterman, a senior who averaged nearly 10 points per game this season, finished with three. He said the moment ignited something in the Cougars, who rallied from a 16-point hole to tie the game late before falling short.
“I think we both just had the ball,” Waterman said. “He came down and elbowed me a little bit so I thought it was going to be a technical. But it is what it is. It’s a physical game, it’s March Madness – you’re not going to get any calls. That’s just what happened.”
Drame said he thought Waterman tried to swing at him as they writhed over possession. He didn’t speak to Waterman the rest of the game, electing to stare him down instead.
“If you know us, we don’t let nobody punk us at all,” Drame said. “You don’t do that to us.”
'Basketball is embedded in Kentuckians' The Morehead State mascot, an eagle named Beaker, clapped his wings and nodded his big yellow beak in the opening minutes of MSU’s game vs. Illinois Thursday.
Morehead State led 9-0 out of the gate with a trio of 3-pointers. At halftime, the Eagles trailed just 39-38.
“Twenty more minutes!” MSU athletic director Kelly Wells said.
The Illini turned up their defense and superior athleticism for an 85-69 win. It was one of those games, Morehead State coach Preston Spradlin said, where his team played well and simply lost to a superior team.
But Morehead State brought a boisterous cheering section, led by a cheerleading squad that recently won its 54th overall national title. Wells’ father started the women’s basketball program. He was born and raised in Morehead.
“As far in east Kentucky as you can get,” Wells said, noting the town is one hour from West Virginia. “Small town U.S.A. That’s definitely a way you can define it. But it’s perfect. Greatest place on the planet. I can say that because I’m from there. It’s one big team family who supports each other. It takes a village to raise children and it takes a village to run a college. And that’s what we do.”
They play good basketball, too. The school tucked in the Appalachian Mountains won 94 games over the last four seasons despite being in a town roughly the size of Seward.
“Basketball is embedded in Kentuckians,” said Wells, a basketball coach at the University of Pikeville (Kentucky) for 15 seasons. “It’s a way of life.”
Big Ten teams cheering for each other Luke Goode got a good-luck text from a Purdue starter. He caught some of the Michigan State win on television.
This is March Madness. When Big Ten teams do something especially crazy — cheer for each other.
Six league teams entered the postseason and its two Thursday reps are moving on after third-seeded Illinois dispatched No. 14 Morehead State 85-69 at CHI Health Center Omaha and No. 8 Michigan State ousted Mississippi State. Four more are coming Friday in top-seeded Purdue, No. 5 Wisconsin, No. 8 Nebraska and No. 9 Northwestern.
“Until we play a Big Ten team, hopefully, I’m rooting for the Big Ten,” said Goode, an Illinois junior wingman who netted nine points and four rebounds in his NCAA opener. “All the Big Ten teams root for each other.”
Why the goodwill? The Big Ten grind steeled the Illini for moments like Thursday, when they led by a single point at halftime before pulling away with a flurry of dunks, drives and deep balls. A slow start didn’t mean the doom of an early upset ouster.
“I think it’s prepared us well,” senior forward Coleman Hawkins said. “Everyone is fully aware what the outcome is if you lose and nobody wants that to happen.”
Illinois sophomore wing Ty Rodgers said the rally against Morehead State reminded him of beating Nebraska in the league tourney semifinals last week. The next task is familiar too: resetting for a quick two-day turnaround. The group, of course, won three games in three days last week for the Big Ten postseason crown.
Eleventh-seeded Duquesne is up next Saturday for a trip to the Sweet 16.
“Learning how to stay positive through everything has certainly helped prepare us for games like this,” Rodgers said.
Goode might check in on the next wave of league teams Friday and think good thoughts. After all, they had a role in why Illinois is still playing.
“I think the Big Ten is the best conference in the country,” Goode said. “You play professional basketball players every night – that’s the reality. When you have that, these really good (Morehead State) guards like (Riley) Minix and (Jordan) Lathon and (Drew) Thelwell, it’s just another night for us. We see those type of dynamic guards every night in the Big Ten and we’re prepared for it.”
Eagles' chant With Illinois opening its second-half lead against Morehead State, high-scoring Illini guard Terrence Shannon stepped to the free-throw line.
Some Eagles fans started chanting "No means no!"
Shannon was suspended for six games during the season because of rape allegations that stemmed from an incident in early September. A judge overturned the suspension and the charge remains pending.
Wisconsin fans chanted the same thing at the Big Ten Tournament.
As was the case Wednesday when all eight teams practiced, Shannon did not attend Thursday's postgame press conference.
Hason Ward above the rim Iowa State forward Hason Ward played 10 minutes, committed four fouls and stuffed home five dunks — including three on alley-oops.
Busy night. Big night. When the 6-foot-9 senior roamed the floor, South Dakota State didn’t have many answers.
“You know, those lobs and the way he can go get them at 11½ , 12 feet and our guys look for him is special,” Iowa State coach T.J. Otzelberger said. “It's definitely given us an added dimension offensively in the flow and transition, as well as in the half-court. You know when he screens and he is getting behind the defense, it's not easy for a guard or others to try to help because he's just — he can go get it so high up in the air. It has really helped us and given us a whole new dynamic offensively.”
Buddies Battle Otzelberger didn’t enjoy playing a program he previously coached in SDSU and a close friend, Jackrabbits coach Eric Henderson. When Otzelberger left Brookings to coach UNLV, Henderson took the job.
“I didn't like the matchup when it came out,” Otzelberger said. “Didn't want to play against those guys. I care about a lot of people on their side and dear friends.”
Henderson — whom SDSU beat reporters called “Hendo” — hopes Iowa State wins the national title now that his team has been eliminated by the Cyclones.
They play so hard and they're so good on the defensive end,” Henderson said, “but what makes them have a chance to win the national championship — and things have to go their way — is their offense, the way they move, the way that they're connected, and the way that they know what they're really good at is special.”
Rental band That wasn't the Duquesne band playing at the NCAA Tournament first-round game.
It was the Omaha Creighton Prep band, on loan for the game.
The Prep students wore matching Duquesne T-shirts while supporting the Dukes during their game against BYU. The group was led by Prep's band director, Paul Ketchen.
"It got set up through Creighton," he said. "Duquesne needed a band and we were happy to do it."
An added perk for the students, who learned the Dukes' fight song, was a $15 concession voucher.
Jays' interest During halftime of the Duquesne-BYU game, Creighton fans were kept apprised of how the Bluejays were doing.
The game was being shown on the big scoreboard over the court.
Need a translation At various times during the game Thursday, a Duquesne assistant coach held up a grease board that must have meant something to the Dukes players.
Among the messages were "UMASS 3 GREASE COUNTER," "HORNS BLACK BEARS" and "X ½ YOYO."
Local connections Though it was in a losing cause, two local players contributed in South Dakota's State's first-round loss to Iowa State.
Bellevue West grad William Kyle and Lincoln Pius X's Charlie Easley were in the Jackrabbits' starting lineup. Kyle is a 6-foot-9 sophomore forward while Easley, who started his collegiate career at Nebraska, is a senior guard.
Kyle played 30 minutes and scored 14 points. He was 6 for 10 from the field — including a few dunks — and yanked down seven rebounds.
Easley played 33 minutes and had 11 points. He was 4 for 11 from the field, including three 3-pointers.
All in the name Maybe it was because he was playing for Iowa State.
Or perhaps it was the fact the Cyclones had a big lead.
It probably was more about his first name that freshman forward Omaha Biliew received a warm ovation when he entered the game.
Biliew is a five-star recruit from Waukee (Iowa) High School.
Distraction time With Iowa State leading by 20 late in the game, the video scoreboard above the court showed the end of the Oakland-Kentucky game.
Many fans were staring upward instead of watching the live game, and only those who called for the upset on their NCAA bracket sheets were happy with the final score.
