Suspect jailed in weekend beating death of 63-year-old man in Birmingham

A suspect is in custody in the weekend beating death of a 63-year-old man in Birmingham.

The suspect was taken into custody Monday. He is being held in the Birmingham City Jail pending formal charges.

North Precinct officers were dispatched at 8:19 a.m. Saturday on a report of a person down in the 400 block of First Street West in Elyton Village.

They arrived to find Roderick Levann Davis unresponsive on the ground. He had apparent facial abrasions, said Sgt. LaQuitta Wade.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service responded to the scene and pronounced Davis dead.

Wade said a passerby made the initial 911 call. It was initially believed that he had died from natural causes and that the abrasions were caused when he fell to the ground.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office notified investigators shortly before 10:30 a.m. that Davis had been physically assaulted and was the victim of a homicide.

Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said the victim died from blunt force trauma injuries.
