1 man killed, 2nd injured in overnight fire in Carver, Massachusetts
One man was killed and another man taken to the hospital after a fire in a Carver, Massachusetts, home late Wednesday night.
First responders were called to a two-story Tremont Street home just before 11 p.m. Wednesday. Carver police, Carver fire and emergency medical personnel encountered heavy fire when they arrived at the scene.
The 911 caller said one of the home's residents ran outside, saying someone was still trapped inside.
"Firefighters quickly located the victim and removed that person. He was declared deceased right away," said Carver Fire Chief Craig Weston.
He was identified as James Collins, 69, according to the office of Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz.
“He was a very good person. He'll be missed," said friend Randy St. Germaine.
The victim's nephew was taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Plymouth for treatment of burns.
"The nephew tried, you know, he tried to come downstairs and do what he could, but the flames and the smoke was just too heavy for him to get to him," said St. Germaine.
No firefighters were hurt.
Officials said the fire is not suspicious, but the exact cause remains under investigation.
The State Fire Marshal's office is helping Carver Fire determine how the fire started.
“He just loved motorcycles. He was a great bike builder. I mean, he's been building bikes his whole life … we've been friends, riding bikes," St. Germaine said.
Neighbor Laura McNamara came by the scene with flowers.
"It makes me feel better, just putting flowers there. I'm so sorry for them," she said.
