A man was shot in the head on a packed New York City subway as terrified passengers dropped to the floor and took covern.

A heart-stopping video captured the dramatic moment a group of New Yorkers instinctively ducked down as a gunshot went off at the Hoyt-Schermerhorn, critically injuring a 36-year-old man. The clip, posted on X by ABC journalist Joyce Philippe, who happened to be in the car when the shot fired, shows the crowd ducking down and shouting. One very audible commuter yelled, "where's the NYPD?" as she crouched behind seats.

Some people held their bags, laptops, and even tablets up to protect their heads during the incident. Another straphanger can be heard screaming, "what the f*** bro!" Another girl was seen red-faced and in tears, as others huddled together to avoid the shots.

An NYPD officer can be seen right outside on the platform listening in on the radio. The shooting took place on an A train around 4:45 p.m., according to the NYPD. Authorities say a 32-year-old man shot a 36-year-old man during a fight.

The 36-year-old man suffered a gunshot to the head and was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Luckily, Phillipe, the journalist who took the video made it out alright. She wrote on X, "The journalist instinct to document it kicked in before anything else, but then it started to feel very dire. I'm just thankful that I was able to walk way safely."

NYPD Chief of Transit Michael Kemper said, "This 36-year-old male was described by multiple witnesses as being aggressive and provocative toward the 32-year-old who just got on," Kemper said.

According to the authorities, the 32-year-old man boarded and began picking a fight with the other man. Then, "The 32-year-old fired multiple shots, striking the 36-year-old," Kemper said at a media briefing. Their relationship is currently unknown, and the incident is being investigated, but police believe the men knew each other.

The shooting took place at a stop where an entire NYPD precinct was right upstairs. "It is very important that it be known there were multiple police officers in this station, just feet away from where this train pulled in that actually heard the shots," Kemper said.

"They were on scene within seconds providing medical assistance, requesting an ambulance and gathering witnesses."
