Indican Pictures has acquired North American rights to Mind, Body & Soul, a mockumentary that marks the feature directorial debut of Robert Lang. The comedy uses humor, wit and “factual” history to tell the story of how the Devil came to be — in his own words and from his West Hollywood apartment.
The pic, which has actually been endorsed by the Satanic Temple, will get a limited release beginning March 29 at Cineworld Sunset in Los Angeles. It will bow on VOD on April 16.
Lang (one of Deadline’s own: he’s our Photo Editor) wrote the script, which he adapted from the short film he created with Conr Kinman. The pair kept the feature tight: The movie was made for under $25,000, with a crew of only a director of photography, sound operator and gaffer on the seven-day shoot.
Kinman also stars as Satan, who in the pic extends an invitation to a documentary crew beckoning them to his Los Angeles abode with the intention of reacquainting himself with society and rectifying his image. When an unexpected revelation surfaces – Satan’s recent expulsion from Hell – the documentary changes course, following Satan’s journey of self-reinvention, rebranding and self-discovery.
Melissa Bergland (Winners & Losers, Into the Dark) and Eric Wu also star.
“Respecting all religions was paramount,” said Lang, whose short films have screened at festivals worldwide, and who also has a background in photography that includes four solo exhibitions. “We chose to eschew ridicule and focus on Satan’s historical persona while delving into the potential persona he might aspire to today — always acknowledging this as my interpretation.
