CLEVELAND (WOIO/Gray News) - The parents of 4-year-old Maisie removed their daughter from life support a common cold took a turn for the worse.

The preschooler’s parents took her to an urgent care after she came down with a stuffy nose and cough last week.

“We got told it was just a common cold, just take her home, lots of fluids and things of that nature,” said Patric Schmidt, Maisie’s dad.

By Saturday, her symptoms quickly worsened.

Maisie was lethargic, so her parents brought her to the emergency room near their home in Strongsville, then to Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital.

“It’s not what you expect,” Schmidt said. “We just thought it was a common cold and that we’d be taking her home the same day, never thought we’d be down here.”

Not long after arriving at the hospital, Maisie was put into a medically induced coma, Schmidt said.

On Monday, doctors found she had suffered a stroke.

“She went in for a CT scan. They said that there was some bleeding on the brain, so they wanted to get a scan of that and in the process of doing so they found that she actually had a very large stroke on the right side of her brain,” Schmidt said.

The 4-year-old was quickly brought in for brain surgery shortly after.

Her dad said part of her brain was so swollen it had to be removed to save her life.

Schmidt said Maisie’s doctors had expected her recovery will take several months.

“She is one of the most lovable people that you’ll ever meet,” Schmidt said. “She’s so smart and so willing to help anyone and she wants everyone to love her just like she loves everyone else.”

On Tuesday, the decision was made to removed the girl from life support.

“There was simply nothing more that could be done,” her family told WOIO. “Thank you for the support and opportunity to share her story.”

Maisie’s family has set up a GoFundMe, so her parents can be with her throughout this fight.
