Featuring new choral music by British composer Rebecca Dale, the BYU Singers singing an old favourite, and some forgotten Czech piano concertos get given a new light.
Rebecca Dale: Night Seasons
This is one of the most breathtaking albums I’ve heard in a while. A lush choral sound that sounds contemporary, but still sacred and old-timely. That combined with the playing of cellist Steven Isserlis, the music sounds divine, wistful, and hopeful all at the same time.
Rebecca Dale is a London based composer, working most often with large orchestral and choral forces in the worlds of cinema and theatre. Night Seasons is an album about hope, looking for the light in difficult times, written during a time of personal difficulty while her father was terminally ill.
Rebecca Dale says “It’s been one of the great privileges of my life to be able to write for cellist heroes of mine to whom I grew up listening. I also got to have fun setting some famous poems… I am indebted to everyone who has created this album with me”.
It’s You I Like - Single
This is a jazzy cover of Mr. Rogers song ‘It’s You I Like’ performed by the BYU Singers and a soulful muted trumpet played by Randy Lee. The ensemble put this together and released a video in time for Valentines Day 2024 and now they have released it as a single.
Show Me The Way (Extended Version)
This is an album of contemporary and 20th century art song and songs by American composers featuring Grammy-winning baritone Will Liverman. “Think German lieder meets jazz,” says a review by Tom Huizenga.
Praised as “nothing short of extraordinary” (Opera News), Will Liverman and Jonathan King have curated a moving and poignant album celebrating American female composers from 20th-century trailblazers Florence Price, Margaret Bonds, and Amy Beach to present-day composers commissioned for this program.
Also featured on the album are Jonathan King’s arrangement of Ella Fitzgerald and Chick Webb’s You Show Me The Way originally performed by the duo at New York’s Savoy Ballroom, as well as a new work, Spell to Turn the World Around, by Kamala Sankaram, with a text that calls awareness to the destruction caused by wildfires.
Forgotten Czech Piano Concertos
An album representing the ‘forgotten’ Czech concertos, which are basically those not by Dvorak and Martinu.
Vitezslava Kapralova wrote the Piano Concerto in D minor, characterised by brilliant instrumentation and an engrossing solo part, at the age of 20 as her graduation work. The premiere, which she herself conducted, met with great critical acclaim. In 1937, the young composer moved to Paris to study with Bohuslav Martinu. Just a year later, Kapralova was lauded at the International Society for Contemporary Music festival in London, which she opened conducting the BBC Orchestra performing her Military Sinfonietta.
Also featured here is composer Karel Kovarovic, a student of Zdenek Fibich, who went on to be mostly known as a conductor and director of Prague’s National Theatre Opera.
