When it comes to marriage, David Foster and Katharine McPhee go with the flow.

The 74-year-old hit producer behind Chris Botti’s new jazz album Vol. 1 tells PEOPLE exclusively that what works for him and McPhee, 39, is being flexible and open to change.

“[Marriage] is a moving target, as you probably know,” says Foster. “If you’re a parent, then you absolutely know.”

Asked if there are any must-follow rules in their relationship, the star says there aren't "any hard and fast rules.”

When it comes to parenting their toddler son Rennie, 3, “Sometimes parents can agree to disagree and then agree on most things and a different philosophy on other things,” he says, “but it just works itself out.”

The father of six, who previously shared that he and McPhee have different ideas on disciplining, adds that their agreements and disagreements are “all for the betterment of the child. Both of us, that’s what we work towards.”

Outside of love and kids, the pair are also longtime collaborators currently in the midst of their An Intimate Evening with David Foster and Katharine McPhee tour.

When it comes to music, he and the singer are in perfect harmony.

“I produced our Christmas album, but it wasn’t like producing,” he says. “It was just me and my wife in the studio just hanging out, making music. My wife and I have this great relationship and it’s always fun to make music with her. She’s an incredible singer and can do anything I ask, which is fantastic in the studio.”

That said, Foster admits McPhee is ready to get back to her solo projects soon.

“She’s a great mom and obviously a great singer, performer and actor, but Covid sort of stopped everybody in their tracks for quite a while,” he says. “It coincided with her becoming a new mom, and she loves being on the road with me but she’s ready to get back to the life she had before me as well as that.”

He teases, “More great things are going to come from her very, very soon.”
