The British comedian, actor and activist Eddie Izzard is coming to Chicago Shakespeare Theater with her solo performance of “Hamlet,” according to an announcement Tuesday by the theater.
The play, which was adapted from Shakespeare by her brother Mark Izzard, previously played in New York at the Orpheum and Greenwich House Theaters, directed by Selina Cadell. It’s coming to Chicago next for a two-week run at Chicago Shakes’ Courtyard Theater on Navy Pier, then heads to London’s Riverside Studios. Tickets are on sale now.
In the adaptation, Izzard (who is gender fluid and stated last year she would go by both Eddie and Suzy and she and he pronouns) portrays 23 characters including the young prince. She and her brother and Cadell previously created and put on a solo adaptation of Charles Dickens’ “Great Expectations” in New York and London; Izzard was recently in Chicago with the political show “Wunderbar” at the Chicago Theatre in 2019 and “The Remix: The First 35 Years” in 2023.
