The car involved in a high-speed police chase and fatal wreck on Interstate 35 in Temple this week was stolen out of Killeen, police verified on Tuesday.
The vehicle — a Mazda 3 passenger car — was reported stolen from the 4000 block of Pilgram Drive in east Killeen on Saturday, Killeen Police Department officials said Tuesday.
However, officials have not verified if the four teenagers in the vehicle — two of whom died in the Monday morning crash — were also from from Killeen.
“I can confirm the were from Bell County,” Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Bryan Washko said Tuesday morning. He said he was making calls to see if he can release the names of the city or cities that the teenagers resided in.
The crash occurred at about 2:23 a.m. Monday near a Cefco convenience store in North Temple. The crash was on the southbound General Bruce Drive frontage road off Interstate 35 near mile marker 304.
The teens in the Mazda 3 were pursued by law enforcement officers, including DPS, the McLennan County Sheriff’s Office and Troy police officers, Washko said, adding the Mazda reached speeds over 100 mph.
“A McLennan County Deputy observed the suspects committing a possible burglary and attempted to stop the suspect vehicle,” Washko said in a news release. “The suspect vehicle failed to yield to the emergency vehicles lights and sirens and evaded the deputy.”
Two teenagers — a 17-year-old male and a 16-year-old female — were pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Ted Duffield.
Two females — one 16-years-old, the other 17, were transported to area hospitals for their injuries, Washko said Monday. One was in critical condition, while the other was in stable condition.
It is not immediately known which of the teens was operating the Mazda, Washko said.
“As the suspect vehicle entered the City of Temple, the vehicle approached a sharp curve on the southbound service road at an extremely high rate of speed. The Mazda left the roadway, rolled multiple times, and ejected all four occupants of the vehicle,” Washko said.
Relatives of the teenagers had been notified of their deaths, but DPS generally does not release the names of minors involved in fatal accidents.
