Teen mom accused of killing baby fighting for lighter sentence

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN)—Jakayla Williams is seeking the youthful offender status in her capital murder case.

Williams is being charged with the death of her baby boy after she allegedly put him in a dumpster with a trash compactor, and lied to authorities about it.

During her arraignment process on Wednesday, Williams applied for the youthful offender status in hopes of a penalty reduction.

In some cases, those granted the youthful offender status can avoid a criminal record.

The status will provide Williams with an informal court process that focuses on rehabilitation, instead of the traditional format of a criminal court.

Williams will find out the court’s decision on May 15th.

She will be arraigned and tried as an adult if she is not granted the youthful offender status.
