A 22-year-old Kokomo man who recently pled guilty for his role in a December 2019 shooting that killed a teenage boy was sentenced Thursday to 20 years in the Indiana Department of Correction.

The defendant, Tyshaun Gregory, will spend 10 of those years in prison, 1.5 years on work release and 3.5 years on in-home detention, while the remaining balance (5 years) will be spent on supervised probation.

Gregory was initially arrested in January 2020 on a felony charge of murder and two felony charges of robbery resulting in serious bodily injury for the death of 15-year-old Dalton Wayne Fisher, per initial police reports.

But per terms of the plea agreement, Gregory was actually sentenced on an amended count of attempted robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, a level 2 felony, and the court dismissed the remaining charges.

It was Dec. 8, 2019, when police were called to a shooting incident just outside the Lincolnwood Apartments.

When officers arrived on scene, they reportedly located Fisher’s body lying on the ground near a black Pontiac Grand Prix.

He had suffered two gunshot wounds to his back, a probable cause affidavit filed through the Howard County Prosecutor’s Office indicated.

Fisher’s sister, identified in the affidavit as 22-year-old Kyli L. Fisher, reportedly told authorities at the time the pair had traveled to the apartment complex to allegedly sell marijuana.

In her interview with police, Kyli Fisher also stated at some point that two unidentified males got into the backseat of the vehicle to complete the drug deal when one — later identified in court records as Gregory — reportedly pulled a gun and tried to rob the siblings, the affidavit noted.

Gregory then reportedly opened fire inside the vehicle, which Kyli Fisher told investigators prompted her to fire her own gun.

Shortly after the incident, Kyli Fisher was arrested on charges of neglect of a dependent, a level 3 felony; possession of a handgun without a permit, a misdemeanor; and dealing a controlled substance, a misdemeanor.

She pled guilty in October 2020 and was subsequently sentenced to four years in the IDOC.

As for his role in the shooting, Gregory didn’t provide a statement during Thursday’s hearing, but defense attorney Brant Parry did state his client wrote a letter to the court during the pre-sentence investigation.

In that letter, according to Parry, Gregory expressed remorse for his connection to Dalton’s death.

But that still won’t bring Dalton back, his mother Melissa Fisher said during her testimony Thursday afternoon.

“Never in a million years did I ever think I’d ever be going through this,” she said, her voice breaking. “I’m living a parent’s nightmare.”

Calling Dalton her “baby” and a “true mama’s boy,” Melissa added her son’s life was taken senselessly and way too soon.

“It’s like a bad dream,” she said. “… Dalton had the biggest heart. He didn’t deserve this.”

Along with Gregory — who was 17 at the time the shooting occurred — police also arrested two 14-year-olds at the time in connection to the incident.

One of the 14-year-olds was arrested on a level 2 felony charge of conspiracy to commit robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, while the other 14-year-old was arrested on a level 2 felony charge of attempted robbery resulting in serious bodily injury.

Due to their ages at the time the incident occurred, the Tribune does not know the outcome of their court proceedings, though Howard County Prosecutor Mark McCann did state Thursday one of their cases has since been resolved in juvenile court.
