The San Diego County Library and the Balboa Park-based Museum of Us are among the 30 finalists for the 2024 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the nation’s highest honor for libraries and museums, the Institute of Museum and Library Services announced Wednesday.

The San Diego County Library is the only library from California to be a finalist.

County Library Director Migell Acosta said the recognition “is a direct result of our collective efforts and the innovative spirit that permeates every corner of our library system to support the customers and communities we serve.”

This is the second year the Museum of Us has been a finalist.

The museum bills itself as “a place for the diverse stories that define us — all of us.”

Two other California museums are also finalists — the Bay Area Discovery Museum in Sausalito and the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco.

The medal winners will be announced in late May.
