Trey Anastasio turned up at the legendary New York City venue, Village Vanguard, on Friday, March 22. On location, the Phish guitarist assisted a friend and member of his Trey Anastasio Band ensemble, bassist Dezron Douglas, with a pair of songs that functioned as finals during the evening’s initial frame.

Billed as the Dezron Douglas Quartet, the evening climaxed during collaborative numbers “B Soul!” and “Release,” with Anastasio adding guitar licks and tapping into the jazz projects’ lean, also accentuated by fellow players Emilio Modeste (saxophone), George Burton (piano), Joe Dyson (drums), and their host.

Douglas officially joined Anastasio’s orbit as a member of TAB in 2021, filling the shoes of the late Tony Markellis, a founding member of the aforementioned group who passed away in the spring of that year. Notably, the lineup billed for the Village Vanguard shows (sans Anastasio) delivered the LP ATALAYA in 2022, demonstrating their ability to meld individual talents into a cohesive and expressive set.

The Dezron Douglas Quartet started its multi-evening stand on Tuesday, March 19, offering a pair of nightly stands billed as early, 8 p.m., and late, 10 p.m., extended through Sunday, March 24. Tickets remain on sale.
