A frantic search ended in heartbreak after a mother and son disappeared Monday afternoon on their way to a doctor's appointment.

The woman's car was found abandoned at a San Antonio, Texas park and the bodies found a short time later of Savannah Kriger, 32, and Kaiden Kriger, 3, were found early Tuesday morning.

Both were reported missing Monday afternoon.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said at a news briefing Tuesday he believes this incident was a murder-suicide and that investigators did find a weapon at the scene and that gunshot wounds were on their bodies.

The saga began around 6 p.m. local time when deputies were called to a home for a welfare check after some concerns were raised about Kriger by friends and family, namely that her phone was going straight to voicemail and a family member -- or friend -- could not see her location services on their phone.

A family member was able to allow authorities entry with consent where they discovered thing that raised concerns about the welfare of both Savannah and Kaiden. Salazar did not provide further details on what those things were.

Deputies then traced Savannah's vehicle to the the park where the GPS on her phone kept pinging. However, authorities did not discover the bodies until Tuesday morning, when park police discovered the bodies in a ditch near the park.

Sheriff Salazar said that Krieger left work early, around 2 p.m. Monday, to pick up her son from daycare. She was seen driving off in a white 2023 Lincoln Aviator, which was later found abandoned at the park.

An initial search of the park began Monday night, but had to be suspended due to darkness.

An AMBER Alert was issued for Kaiden and Sheriff Salazar said Savannah and Kaiden's father were going through a custody battle. Both were supposed to be back in court on Tuesday for a hearing.
