Pioneer Valley High School’s Theater Company will present the Broadway hit musical “Damn Yankees,” 7 p.m. April 11, 12, 13, 18, 19 and 20 in the school’s Performing Arts Center.

The production has a cast of 33 students and 15 Pioneer Valley crew members, said PVHS drama teacher Selyn Barrette Harwin.

Among the cast members, 27 are from PVHS, two attend Righetti High School, and four are in middle school (Arellanes, Tommy Kunst, and Fesler schools), Harwin said.

“Damn Yankees” is the story of middle-aged baseball fanatic Joe Boyd, who trades his soul to a Mr. Applegate, for a chance to lead his favorite team to victory in the pennant race against the New York Yankees.

As young baseball sensation Joe Hardy, he (Boyd) transforms the hapless Washington Senators into a winning team, only to realize the true worth of the life he’s left behind. Joe ultimately outsmarts Applegate, returns to his former self and shepherds the Senators to the World Series.

The production is based on the novel “The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant,” by Douglas Wallop.

“PVHS’s production of ‘Damn Yankees’ has given young people in the community an amazing opportunity to participate in the golden age of theater,” said Righetti High senior Olivia Hugh. “Throughout the process we’ve learned so much about character development in order to do the show justice.

“It has so many wonderful components, and the cast is so talented. We are so excited and so grateful to be a part of this show.”

“Damn Yankees is a thrilling action-packed musical about baseball,” said Jordan McCormick, a senior at PVHS. “Our cast is a group of young, energetic, talented performers who are very excited to perform in front of live audiences.”
