Cape Cod native killed in Miami murder-suicide was a celebrated hockey player

Meghan Moore, the 25-year-old Cape Cod native who was killed in a murder-suicide in Florida over the weekend, is being remembered for her athletic prowess.

Moore was killed by 40-year-old Miami resident Luis Napoles at her Miami condo Saturday evening, along with her roommate, 23-year-old Sidney Capolino, according to Miami-Dade police. Officers responded to the condo shortly after the shooting began and tried to save the women, but were unsuccessful.

Napoles turned the gun on himself after killing the two friends, according to police. Authorities identified him as Moore’s boyfriend, but her mother disputed this to the The Cape Cod Times, saying he was someone she’d worked with in the past. Police have not identified a motive in the killing.

Moore and Capolino were roommates at their alma mater, New England College, Moore’s family told The Cape Cod Times. They were also teammates on the Henniker, New Hampshire, college’s women’s hockey team, according to the college.

New England College President Wayne Lesperance Jr. sent a letter to the college’s community announcing the two graduates’ deaths on Monday. Moore graduated in 2021, and Capolino graduated in 2022, he said.

“Meghan and Sidney were known to many on campus, and we are deeply saddened by this devastating news,” Lesperance wrote. “We are keeping Sidney and Meghan’s families and friends in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.”

Moore’s hockey team bio lists her as a 2017 graduate of Barnstable High School. She played offense and was named a Schreiner and League All-Star player, it says.

Moore’s mother told The Cape Cod Times that hockey was one of her daughter’s passions. She played for Falmouth youth hockey teams during her early years, and spent five years on Barnstable High School’s varsity girls hockey team.

During the summer, Moore worked at Spanky’s Clam Shack in Hyannis where her father, William Moore, is a manager, her parents told the newspaper. She graduated from New England College with a degree in criminal justice.

As of Tuesday, Moore’s funeral arrangements had not been decided, The Cape Cod Times reported. Her family told the newspaper that they appreciate the support they’ve received from the Cape and New England hockey communities.
