Afroman ousts Kylie from No 1
Pop idol Kylie Minogue was ousted from the top of the charts tonight by a novelty anthem about drug use.
Mississippi-based Afroman, with his a capella track Because I Got High, sent the Aussie singer's single toppling from the Number One spot after four weeks.
Kylie's Can't Get You Out Of My Head held off heavyweight stars such as Michael Jackson but proved no match for Afroman's debut single.
Lyrics to the new song are a tongue-in-cheek reference to the apathy induced by cannabis smoking, as well as its effect on users.
But the singer, real name Joseph Foreman, denies the track is pro-drug use. He told BBC Radio One it is more of a cautionary tale about the effects of marijuana.
The song created such a buzz in the music world that even before it was released in Britain it reached the top 50 on import sales alone.
This week Because I Got High sold over 56,000 copies more than Kylie's Can't Get You Out Of My Head, which has sold 778,000 copies so far.
