Independence Announces Interim Police Chief

The City of Independence announces an interim police chief taking over for outgoing Chief Jerry Harrison.

City Manager Kelly Passauer says they have the appointed retired Associate Director of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation David Hutchings as the interim police chief. Hutchings will take over after Chief Harrison's last day on April 5th. Harrison, who had served as the chief since 2016, announced his resignation last week, after accepting the chief of police position in Lebanon, Missouri. A 33-year veteran of the KBI, Hutchings retired from the bureau in August, where he had served as associate director since 2011.

Passauer says they are fortunate to bring someone with his caliber of skill and experience to the community. A farewell reception for Chief Harrison is scheduled for next Thursday, March 28, at 4:30pm. The reception will be before the city commission meeting at City Hall. The public is invited to attend.
