Independence appoints interim police chief

INDEPENDENCE, Kan. — The City of Independence, Kansas named a new police chief.

According to a Facebook post, city manager Kelly Passauer announced the appointment of David Hutchings, retired Associate Director of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) as interim police chief for IPD.

The assignment comes after the resignation of Chief Jerry Harrison who will officially leave the role for a chief of police position in Lebanon, Missouri on April 5.

Hutchings, a 33-year veteran of KBI retired from his position at the bureau last August. He earned his certification through the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center and possess a bachelor’s degree in Geology and Geophysics from Kansas State University.

“We are fortunate to bring someone with Mr. Hutchings’ caliber of skill and experience to our community and look forward to his leadership of our force as we conduct a thoughtful search for Chief Harrison’s replacement,” said Passauer.

Hutchings steps into chief position on March 25.
