RAPID CITY, S.D. - Hills Alive nearly didn't happen in 2024. However, Lifelight out of Sioux Falls made a commitment that they would partner with the festival and bring the region's largest music festival back for 2024.
The two-day festival, July 20-21, will have many bands in attendance with 10 artists having been announced so far.
Lifelight CEO Josh Brewer says that they are not done announcing artists yet. Expect more band announcements coming soon.

Although they’ve always been an act that’s endeavored to wrap melody around doctrinally-sound lyrics, recent events forced the members of Unspoken to stand on the promises of God more than ever before.
It’s been three years since Unspoken released a full-length album. In those three years, a global pandemic forced them off the road, their drummer nearly died from COVID, and they suffered multiple lineup changes. All of this transpired amidst a cultural backdrop of division and hatred. Taking both their personal hurdles and their mutual grief into the studio with them, the band began crafting their next record. The theme that quickly emerged? Love. While it might sound trite or simplistic, the reality — as the group soon discovered — is that it’s everything we need.
Unspoken’s upcoming LP — their fourth studio project — follows 2019’s Reason, whose title track became the band’s biggest multi-format chart-topper to date. The album also produced a pair of Top 20 singles: “You’ve Always Been” and “Just Give Me Jesus.” Since their self-titled debut in 2014, the five-piece has charted a parade of hits led by Chad Mattson’s unmistakable vocal, including “Who You Are,” “Lift My Life Up,” “Good Fight” and “Start A Fire,” which became the collective’s first No. 1. Moreover, their career has been fueled by Mattson’s transparency as a songwriter who’s battled addiction and is now nearly two decades into his sobriety. Along the way, Unspoken has shared the stage with TobyMac, Casting Crowns, MercyMe and Big Daddy Weave, among other artists, living out their mission to be unspoken testimonies to God’s love and power and to speak what oftentimes goes unsaid.
Their new music aims to continue to bring unspoken truths to light. In a culture that regularly takes cheap shots online, Unspoken wants to point people to the truth of God’s Word. “Every song was inspired by a Bible verse that we were reading,” shares Mattson of the band’s anticipated album. “It’s been a journey in regards to writing the songs. Our words are less important than God’s words, so we just started praying and asking God to put His words into these songs.”
Although they’ve always been an act that’s endeavored to wrap melody around doctrinally-sound lyrics, recent events forced the members of Unspoken to stand on the promises of God more than ever before. “When all of our work went away because of the pandemic, we realized a lot of our identity is caught up in what we do and what we can accomplish,” Mattson confesses. “Not being able to accomplish anything really drew us to the Word of God.”
Their bandmate’s serious illness also steered them back to the basics after their drummer, Ariel Munoz, was hospitalized with COVID for nine days. “My oxygen got really, really low. It was 3 a.m., and I was dreaming I was drowning. Except I wasn’t dreaming — my body wasn’t getting any oxygen,” Munoz recalls, adding that the doctors were close to intubating him. “The only thing I remember is asking God for peace. By the grace of God, the numbers came up a little bit, and I came out of the danger zone later that morning.”
For Mattson and fellow bandmates Jon Lowry (bass), Zach Smith (guitars) and Matthew Callaway (keys), Munoz’s brush with death emphasized the deep brotherhood they possess. Mattson notes: “I think one of the things this whole season has taught us is just how important community is.”
They were also reminded of the unique bond they share with their fans as hundreds of prayers, cards and letters poured in with thoughts and messages of well wishes for Munoz. “The love and support we received from fans was super encouraging,” Mattson says.
“They called me the ‘rock star’ because of all the letters that came in every day,” Munoz adds, laughing. “It was amazing.”
The response from fans also affirmed the purpose behind Unspoken’s efforts. “Our job is to encourage people along the way, encourage people in their journey,” Mattson says. “Sometimes it’s to encourage people to be more like Jesus, and sometimes it’s to encourage people to accept what God’s Word says about them.”
Their timely track, “Loved By You,” focuses on the latter part of that mission, encouraging listeners to accept the love of God. “It’s so hard to understand God’s love, and it’s so hard to receive it. It’s so hard to understand that God loves us even in the midst of our mess,” Mattson reasons. “We don’t have to struggle and strive to earn God’s love. He gives it to us freely because we are His children, and His love changes us and allows us to love others in the same way. That is revolutionary when you think about it. That’s what this song is really about.”
Lead single “Love Is Everything We Need” looks at love from a different point of view. Mattson penned the upbeat, lighthearted offering following a disagreement with friends. “I have a lot of grace for people, but I also expect a lot of grace from people,” the frontman admits. “This song is a call to the Church to be in the world, but not of it, and to extend grace and love to people even when we don’t agree.”
Bringing the heartbeat of the song to life, Unspoken’s five members take on the role of wedding singers in the comedy-sketch-turned-clever-music-video. Hijinks ensue with a cast of surprising cameos from Victoria Jackson (Saturday Night Live), Richard Lee Jackson (Saved by the Bell: The New Class), Michele Pillar, Danny Gokey and more.
“Love Is Everything We Need” also marks the first song to feature Smith and Callaway, the band’s newest members — welcome additions Mattson says round out the group in a way that only God can. Sonically, their backgrounds are diverse: Smith brings a Southern Gospel/Country vibe; Callaway adds a soulful, Gospel feel; Lowry grew up on Steven Curtis Chapman and Paul Simon; Munoz was raised on a mix of Latin-infused beats and ’80s rock; and Mattson draws on hip-hop and R&B influences. Together, they form a cohesive blend of sounds, ideas and sonic textures — all rooted in their faith.
“It gives us a wonderful picture of the body of Christ and how a group of really different people can accomplish quite a bit together,” offers Mattson. “I love being a part of a band. It’s one of the greatest things I’ve been able to be a part of, outside of my family. Even through hardship, God has kept us together and used each one of our upbringings and experiences to allow us to make something beautiful.”
With their forthcoming album, Unspoken wants that beauty to lie in the meaning behind the music. “The whole goal is to encourage each other in the faith,” Mattson insists. “With this record, we want to encourage the body to live what the Word of God says, to believe what the Word of God says and to stand up for what the Word of God says.”
Perhaps the best place to start is 1 Corinthians 13:13: “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.”

From Moses to Job to Jesus, the most intrepid heroes in scripture knew times of trouble that multiplied like a plague but always led, in the end, to mighty celebration.
It's easy to assume that such stories of trial and triumph are reserved for the Bible's books or the history books. But miracles happen, even when adversity hits hardest. Just ask Josh Havens, guitarist and lead vocalist of the Afters. He relates how the band's latest effort, Live on Forever, began during a season of tragedy.
Just as the band regrouped to record, Havens witnessed the wife of a close friend contract cancer. Drummer Jordan Mohilowski (who produced the new album) had a brief health scare, and a close companion in his church—part of the worship team—was hit and killed by an impaired driver. She was a young woman, Havens says, who had unlimited potential.
But Live on Forever still took shape as a celebration of faithfulness, protection, and promise—one that shimmers with strong rhythms, undeniable energy, and compelling pop hooks. The album finds Havens in strong, soaring voice as he invites listeners to find shelter and strength in God.
"If any theme has emerged, it would be 'inspiration and motivation,'" Havens says. "Look at the titles we've selected: They reflect themes of 'rise up, get up, God has your back, you're not in this alone.' We thought, 'Let's encourage people and let this be a weapon for people's faith: something they can hold onto.'"
Havens himself felt a deep need to hold on after another loss struck: The band's longtime soundman, Anthony Martinez, saw his newborn daughter die in infancy.
"I remember going to that funeral and seeing a casket that was way smaller than any casket should ever be," Havens recalls. "I will never understand why tragedies like that happen in this life. It was in that moment of loss and sadness that our thoughts turned to eternity. 'What is heaven going to be like? We began writing 'Live On Forever' and pulled from Revelation where it describes heaven as a place where there's no more pain, no more crying, no more suffering."
And as a sonic sanctuary for the hurting and the hopeful, Live on Forever celebrates a triumphant message in a convincing musical fashion. On the title track, Havens answers his spiritual questions with a clear answer delivered in clarion tenor. The word 'forever' rings with an echo to reach cerulean skies as it joins a thunderous beat to topple the anguish and struggling: "Heaven is real," he declares.
Yet for all the assertive, punchy rhythms and anthems that drive this album—the band's fifth with the Fair Trade label—Live on Forever also showcases textures and timbres across an appealing spectrum. "Sunrise" lives up to its name, its dynamics unfolding gradually to reveal a vista of tight harmonies, while "Time of My Life" recalls the Cure's "Close to Me" with its irresistible, uptempo dance beat.
Ask Havens to pick out a song that sums up the spirit of the album, and he chooses "Battles." "It was the last song we wrote and the fastest we wrote," he says. "We don't typically write songs fast; we'll change lyrics and melodies and craft our songs carefully. But 'Battles' poured out, the music and lyrics, in one day."
A cascading march rhythm rises up as Havens praises God for his ever-present protection: "Your love is my armor, I fear no evil/ Darkness runs from your light, so I won’t be afraid." It’s followed in thrilling fashion by a thick bed of keyboard arpeggios and whiplash accents that smash out the chorus: "You're going before me, and oceans are parting/ You're fighting my battles."
"It's about standing up against fear and knowing God is always with us," Havens explains. "It's one of the takeaways we hope people get: 'Don't give in to fear.' That captures the theme of the whole record and stands out as representing what we want it to be."
Listeners who pick up on that track's spirit—and the overwhelming energy that marks Live On Forever—are certain to resonate. What they might not know, though, is how Havens' season of despair came to a seemingly supernatural end.
Havens shares how, half a world away from his home in Phoenix, he caught a small glimpse of heaven's reassurance.
The band was touring in Amsterdam and had asked soundman Martinez and his wife to join following the tragic loss of their daughter in an effort to shower the couple with love and support.
While the band was sound-checking, their wives explored the city and stumbled upon the perfect place to go for a post-show dinner: A Café called Pieper. It was the only time they had ever seen another use of the spelling that they had chosen for their daughter's name.
After the show, they headed to the café, where they shared words of support and remembered Pieper. But upon getting up to leave, they noticed that the only thing on any of the walls was a framed document—an award given to the Pieper Café for hospitality. The date on the award—the only date visible in the entire café—was the same date as baby Pieper's birthday.
"We were all in disbelief. Pieper's name and birthdate on a wall, in a café, all the way on the other side of the world!"
Havens sums up the reassurance all took home that night: "This is where God's angels fly: right in the middle of our loss. God gives us little glimpses to show us that he's here, even in the midst of our pain."
So it was with the songs The Afters wrote and recorded in the days to follow. It only takes a spark of God's love to ignite a creative flame, and in turn, a torch to light the path for all. As Havens declares on the joyful "Eyes of a Believer": "So put your gloves on and pull out the fighter/ And never let anyone put out your fire."
Havens knows from where he sings.
"When I think about the things that have challenged my faith the most—the dark nights of my life—these are also the very things that have strengthened my faith most. In the midst of tragedy, I've experienced God's presence."
And through that forever presence, those dark nights turned into bright, shining music.
"We worked on this record for almost two years, and over those two years, it was a real season of loss," Havens recalls. "But in the end, Live on Forever is about moving us to trust God, to stand up against fear. It's an 'amp you up' record, an anthem for people's lives: 'God, you are with me in all this. I'm not alone.'"

Worship pastor and songwriter, Jon Reddick, has a heart for the church and the songs that pour out from congregations into world. Throughout his writing career he’s intentionally composed lyrics that speak about redemption and hope in a way that impacts cross cultural narratives of a generation hungry for healing. On August 13th, 2017, he found himself at a crossroads. It was Sunday morning and he was on deck to lead worship. But that Sunday was different. He’d spent the previous two days hearing about the shocking events unfolding in Charlottesville, Virginia, where white supremacists surrounded a small group of black protesters on the University of Virginia campus. The protest, which quickly turned violent, garnered national attention and resulted in three deaths. “There was so much discord surrounding that event,” Reddick shares. “It was really difficult being a minority in a moment like that. It was a really lonely feeling. All I could think about was my 12-year-old son and how someone could hate him before ever getting to know him. It was the first time I’d allowed myself feel the pain of racism in a deep way. In that moment, I wished I had the right song, something that could talk about hope.” Finding hope through music had long been part of Reddick’s makeup. Growing up the son of a pastor and the church pianist in Memphis, TN, and brother to six siblings including Janice, who went on to become a Stellar Award and GMA Dove Award nominated recording artist for Motown Gospel, music was woven into Reddick’s DNA from the start. During college, he cut his songwriting teeth writing songs for and leading a contemporary gospel group. After his college years, Reddick got into church work, leading worship for a church in Memphis and eventually making his way to Texas. In both places, Reddick leaned in to bridge-building across racial and generational lines, working to bring churches and cultures together under one faith umbrella. “At one of my first jobs in full-time church ministry, I led this generationally diverse choir filled with people ranging from 18 years old to 70 years old. We would fuse hymns and contemporary gospel. I wanted to try and bring people together no matter what their differences were, wanted people to go to church and not just sing songs, but find something they could engage with and have a true experience. I wanted to reach across the lines.” Eventually, Reddick and his family made their way to Nashville, where God kept putting unlikely people in his path. He had the opportunity to work on songwriting with artists like Matt Redman, Tommy Sims, Josh Kerr, Nicole C. Mullen and Sheryl Crow. He accepted a position on staff at a church just outside Nashville in Franklin, TN, the same church where he was leading worship that Sunday in August. Reeling from the hurt of racism and searching for a way to communicate it to the congregation, Reddick asked God to give him the words to express what he was feeling. A few days later, Reddick went to a songwriting session with some friends where the song “You Keep Hope Alive” was birthed. “It felt like God had answered my prayer from that Sunday morning,” Reddick says. The song was incorporated into the church’s worship service where it instantly connected. What started as a personal prayer to deal with his own hurt became an anthem for the congregation. Reddick had the opportunity to perform “You Keep Hope Alive” at the Worship Together Conference as well as the IF:Gathering, where its impact spread and Nashville songwriters and record labels came calling, eager to record it. The song also caught the attention of label executives at Gotee Records, who signed Reddick to a label and publishing deal. In addition to being a talented musician, Reddick is also a creative visual artist. In a fusion of his artistic and musical sides, one of his paintings ended up becoming the single cover for “You Keep Hope Alive.” “I painted it as a response to Charlottesville. For me, art is a way for me to get my words out. It gives voice to what I’m feeling, allows me to say something in my own way. It’s okay to let people interpret it how they to interpret it, because it’s something bigger.” After years of leading worship, writing songs for the church and even touring and playing keys with Nashville artists Nicole C. Mullen and Mandisa, Reddick is now ready to pour all of his experience and passion into his songs. “I just want to be a conduit to help people reconcile themselves with God and each other,” Reddick says. “I want to bring people together. I consider it an honor and a privilege to get to lead people in the transparency of worship.”

It was when Jordan St. Cyr was a teen and served with Youth With a Mission (YWAM) that he found the inspiration to pursue music as a career. He eventually released an EP, and in the years that have followed, he has released more music and has received numerous life-changing opportunities to work alongside many talented songwriters, producers, and artists, all of whom have encouraged him along his journey. From playing numerous events of all sizes and meeting people from many different walks of life, humanity’s deep desire for meaningful connection has been revealed to him and the hope to find something more vibrant than our current reality.
St. Cyr dropped his first full-length self-titled album in the spring of 2022 with Seattle-based label, BEC Recordings. The project features the chart-climbing radio hits "Fires" and "Weary Traveler" - both of which offer a pursuit of hope, even in our darkest moments, to know that God gives us stories to share and encourage one another through our fires and weary travels, to give us strength in the midst of them. And it was “Fires” that quickly put St. Cyr on the map, hitting the airwaves on major networks and stations for nearly 18 months straight and reaching millions weekly and going top 5. “Weary Traveler” followed, which also became his first No. 1 hit single, taking the top spot on all radio charts.
2022 continued to be an astounding year for St. Cyr. He became a two-time GMA Dove Awards nominee, being recognized for Best New Artist and for Short-Form Video Of The Year ("Weary Traveler”), followed by sweeping the GMA Canada Covenant Awards with six wins, the most out of any other nominees and adding to his already five Covenant Award wins. He was recognized as Artist of the Year, Album and Male Vocalist of the Year along with Best Pop Song, Live Music Artist, and AC Artist of the Year.
While he continues to create music and tour, Jordan St. Cyr is really just getting started.

New CCM duo Caleb & John are writing their own definition of brotherhood. Two men who came to music in completely different ways, Caleb & John have created their own distinctive sound with joy-fueled, high-energy vocals paired with vibrant musicality all pointing to Jesus. In short, their music is hopeful and fun, just like Caleb & John themselves.
Forming a duo wasn’t the obvious choice in the beginning. Caleb, a pastor’s kid from the northeast, grew up on a steady stream of Christian music while John, the only brother to five sisters, came to love it as a young adult. John taught himself to play guitar and piano through videos on YouTube where Caleb is a classically trained musician. John’s personal style leans toward the gritty, rootsy side and Caleb’s sweet spot is in pop melodies. While both playing for other artists like Sam Hunt, Katy Nichole, CAIN and Anne Wilson, Caleb and John met through a mutual friend who believed they might work well together. “When we met it was an interesting difference,” John says. “We hit off immediately, but it took a minute for us to find the right sound together.” “We didn’t find our sound right away,” Caleb says. “I thought John was so awesome, but I wasn’t sure if we’d be a musical fit. But once we decided to just jam for a while, both of us hopping instrument to instrument, that’s when we found the magic.”
Caleb & John’s individual life experiences and approaches to music are what fuel their collaborative songwriting as well as their personal connection. “John’s an intuitive creative and I’m an analytical creative,” Caleb says. “John will come up with these ideas I would never think of and I’ll help shape them and mold them. We’re able to talk to each other and lean on each other. We complement each other very well.” “Doing this with Caleb is so much better than going it alone,” John says. “I love being able to just hang out with someone and go through this whole thing together. We can bounce ideas off each other.” Caleb adds, “When you’re in a duo, you both have strengths and weaknesses that help you balance each other out. You get the best of both.”
“Hallelujah Feeling,” the duo’s infectious debut single, is an intersection of both Caleb & John’s styles, a hook-driven pop melody with a driving, rootsy vibe and a little rock and roll thrown in for good measure. Based on Romans 15:13 which says, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit,” it’s Caleb & John’s declaration of their intentional belief that Jesus is the answer. “We love that hallelujah is more than a feeling,” Caleb says. “It’s the joy of the Lord, something anyone can have when they know Jesus. It perseveres through hardship because it’s more than a feeling.”

Terrian was born and raised in Memphis, TN where she has rooted herself in community and mentorship being part of AngelStreet Memphis. AngelStreet mentors girls through musical training in areas with limited artistic opportunities while empowering the girls to understand their value, discover their purpose and become creative leaders. In addition to her debut song, She's also the newest artist on the Gotee Records family with the release of her debut song and music video, "God With Us," available now. The song was produced by Chuck Butler (Tauren Wells, India Arie) and co-written by Terrian. A familiar face to concertgoers, Terrian joined TobyMac's Diverse City band in 2017 - being seen on the last two Hits Deep tours. Terrian is featured on TobyMac's "Scars (Stereovision Remix)" and on last years' praised The Beatitudes Project from Stu G.
