In general, lead-acid batteries are cheaper than lithium-ion but also more limited in total power capacity and expected system lifetime.

Nickel Cadmium (NiCad)

Although you may be more familiar with nickel Cadmium (NiCad) batteries in the AA or AAA format, the technology can also be used to store solar energy. However, rechargeable NiCad systems do not offer the same premium capabilities as today’s lithium solar batteries. Instead, NiCad storage packs work well for small devices such as solar garden lights. 

Flow Batteries

Flow batteries, also known as redox (reduction-oxidation) batteries, are an emerging technology for large-scale energy storage systems. While not yet widely available, flow battery systems utilize chemical components dissolved in a liquid to efficiently store energy in the form of an electrolyte. As the technology has only just arrived on the market, it is uncertain if flow batteries will be as economical for small home installations as other battery chemistries.

Today’s best solar batteries are usually lithium-ion based, utilizing either LFP, NMC or another type of battery chemistry.
