ANY SUSPECT INFORMATION. MAN POLICE ARE STILL TRYING TO FIND THE DRIVER WHO HIT AND KILLED A MAN ON A BICYCLE IN FLORENCE. THIS HAPPENED SUNDAY ON DIXIE HIGHWAY. DEPUTIES WERE CALLED JUST BEFORE 530 IN THE MORNING FOR REPORTS OF A MAN NOW IDENTIFIED AS 38 YEAR OLD SIMON AGUILAR LAYING ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. DEPUTIES FOUND AN ABANDONED F-150 TRUCK NEARBY, WHICH THEY DETERMINED HAD HIT AGUILAR, DEPUTY SAY THEY HAVE IDENTIFIED A SUSPECT BUT ARE NOT RELEASING THAT PERSON’

A man has been arrested and charged in a fatal hit-and-run that happened last year.It happened around 5:27 a.m. on July 2, 2023, when deputies say they were called to a crash with injury near the 10000 block of Dixie Highway in Florence.Authorities say arriving deputies located the man, later identified as 38-year-old Simon Aguilar, lying in the grass adjacent to the roadway, as well as a heavily damaged bicycle.An investigation found Aguilar was riding his bike alongside Dixie Highway in Florence when he was fatally struck by a Ford F-150.Deputies later found the abandoned truck just south of the crash scene. The driver was lateridentified as 28-year-old Jeovany Alexander Mendez. Deputies said he was never located after fleeing the scene, and detectives later obtained a warrant for his arrest.According to the Boone County Sheriff's Office, the United States Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force led the fugitive investigation into capturing Mendez. The sheriff's office said that despite family ties to Northern Kentucky, Mendez fled the area and resided in different states, including Ohio, Tennessee and North Carolina.On Wednesday, the USMS received a tip that Mendez had returned and was currently on Dream Street in Florence. USMS saw Mendez's fiancé and two children in a motel parking lot getting into an SUV driven by Mendez. USMS stopped the vehicle and took Mendez into custody.The sheriff's office said during the arrest, they found out he had fake identification.They also arrested his fiance, 27-year-old Guisela Lopez Gomez, after finding out she also had fake Social Security cards and identification.Mendez is charged with reckless homicide, leaving the scene of an accident, criminal possession of a forged instrument and possession of an open alcohol contained in connection with the fatal hit-and-run.He's also charged with theft of identity and criminal possession of a forged instrument.He's currently being held at the Boone County Detention Center on an Immigration Detainer.Gomez is charged with theft of identity and criminal possession of a forged instrument.She is being held at the Boone County Detention Center but has since been released on a $2,500 cash bond.
