Police officer shot in Dorchester, suspect in custody

The Boston police officer suffered non-life threatening injuries from a gunshot wound, police said.

A Boston police officer was shot in Dorchester and taken to the hospital with non-life threatening Monday night, Boston police said.

Boston police confirmed that an adult man is in custody, and a gun was confiscated.

Police responded to a domestic incident around 9:30 p.m. on Esmond Street near Blue Hill Avenue and Franklin Park. Police said officers were notified while heading toward the scene that there was possibly a person with a gun.

When the officers arrived, a police spokesperson said a person shot at officers and struck one, who was wearing a bulletproof vest. Other officers on the scene took the alleged shooter into custody. The injured officer was taken to Boston Medical Center.

Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox said the officer hit by the bullet has been on the force for less than two years.

“He’s doing well, and that’s the important thing,” Cox told reporters Monday night. “He followed his training, and he’s another heroic officer, showing restraint and doing everything we can to protect the public.”

Mayor Michelle Wu and Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden joined Cox at the hospital Monday night to support the officer.

“Tonight is yet another reminder of all that our officers and their families put on the line to serve our city,” Wu said.

Hayden said the alleged shooter, who was not named, is expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court Tuesday morning.

“We are just thankful to God that (the officer is) alive and well, that our first responders and officers responded and did a great job with tremendous restraint,” Hayden said. “More will be revealed when he’s arraigned tomorrow.”

Cox said Esmond Street will be closed off to motor vehicle traffic through the morning.
