MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Only on FOX13, the man who got shot at the Walmart in Cordova last Friday spoke out about what happened inside the store.

FOX13 spoke to Lemonte Grandberry hours after one of many surgeries he’ll need after getting shot nine times.

Tamarris Hopkins, the man police arrested for the shooting, faced a judge Friday morning.

"He was right there and in the section where, you know, where you go into the place. So he hits his girl in her face. She started saying she don't want to take this anymore and she deserves better. So we turned around, you know, just out of curiosity, saying, 'What's going on,'” Grandberry said.

Grandberry said, after seeing Hopkins punch a woman in the face, he just wanted to make sure she was ok.

He said the gesture was followed by a punch in his face from Hopkins.

He said after the punch Hopkins began shooting him, Grandberry’s seven year old son within arms reach when the shooting started.

“I mean, he's continuously shooting like he was really trying to kill me. My son had enough smarts to run away with his uncle and I was blessed that he didn't get hit,” Grandberry said.

Grandberry said he went to the Walmart to get charcoal for his grill with his seven-year-old old and his brother in law.

In court, Hopkins told the judge he got fired from his job the day of the shooting.

“The lady that works there says he's the new hire here at Walmart. They were in the process of firing him, but he had his Wal-Mart's vest on. So I know he was a Walmart employee,” Grandberry said.

Grandberry said Hopkins shot at him 15 times.

Nine of those bullets hit him.

"So he shot me in my feet. My foot was literally, I was looking at my tennis shoes and my foot dangling. But the Lord bless me, I did not lose my leg. Oh, my point. Oh, he shot me and my femur. He shot me and above my pelvis fractured. He shot me in my right knee. That bullet came out,” Grandberry said.

FOX13 previously reported that police said Hopkins and Grandberry exchanged gun fire.

Hopkins told me his gun wasn’t ready for any exchange of gun fire.

“Yeah, I had a firearm on me, but I didn't have it engaged. I had just left home, didn't feel a need to have something in the head. And that's how he was able to shoot me. And I wasn't able to shoot back,” Grandberry said.

Tamarris Hopkins will be back in court April 1.
