Proposed ordinances could put moratorium on car washes and storage units in Cape Coral
New city ordinances could slow the growth of car washes and storage units in Cape Coral.Cape Coral City Council is considering two ordinances that would put moratoriums on car washes and storage units in the Cape. According to the measure, there are already 25 car washes in Cape Coral. If you count the number of car washes under construction, there are nearly 40. The ordinance also states that once all approved storage units are done with construction, there will be 3.1 million square feet of storage unit space in the city. That's more than double what the industry standard says is enough for a city the size of Cape Coral.Lynn Jenkins will soon be neighbors with a Tommy's Car Wash near Santa Barba Boulevard and Kamal Parkway. She supports the new ordinances but wishes the city council had acted sooner. “I feel like Cape Coral needs other businesses. Not car washes. Not storage units. We need higher level businesses. Professionals. Other businesses that are going to bring big tax-payer money to help us out on our taxes and not all these cheaper commercial businesses on every corner or car washes making a lot of noise, using all our reclaimed water,” Jenkins said. City council will have a public hearing on both ordinances on April 3. If they pass, no more car washes or storage units can apply for permits between April 17 and January 17, 2025.
