UTICA, N.Y. -- Oneida County is advising residents to take safety precautions during the upcoming total solar eclipse on April 8.

The County said to expect potential traffic delays and disruptions to communications on the day of the solar event.

"The influx of eclipse watchers will cause traffic delays, lags in cellular service and potentially impede emergency response," Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente said.

According to Picente's office, the northern part of Oneida County will experience the total solar eclipse from 2:07 p.m. to 4:33 p.m.

Totality is set to begin locally around 3:21 p.m. and is anticipated to last approximately 1 minute and 24 seconds.

"During that time, it will appear to be dark even if it is cloudy, the temperature could fall by as much as 10 degrees and animals and plants may behave as if it’s nighttime," the County stated in a release.

Picente emphasized the importance of taking necessary precautions when observing the eclipse, such as using proper eyewear, selecting safe viewing locations, and being prepared with essential supplies in case of vehicle issues.

Enthusiasts from across the State are expected to gather in Oneida County to witness the celestial phenomenon.

The increased amount of people in the area, the County said, "could also impede emergency response and slow down and limit cellular service."

April 8 will not be like a typical day in Oneida County. Not only is there expected to be more people in the area, but also some local school are closing or dismissing early. Certain businesses are also planning to shut down, at least during the period of totality.

“If you plan to visit Oneida County for this rare event, please, come early and stay late,” Picente added. “The more we can avoid people coming and going all at once, the smoother and safer things will go for everyone.”

The next total solar eclipse projected for Oneida County is scheduled for the year 2144.

Oneida County has dedicated a section of its website to the 2024 eclipse. Click here to access it.
