Clemson basketball's historic season hopes to hit its highest note yet.Back in the Sweet 16 for the fifth time in program history, and just the second time this century, the six-seeded Tigers meet the two-seeded Arizona Wildcats in the West Region's semifinal Thursday night (7:09 p.m. ET, CBS). The Tigers could join the 1980 team as the only two to reach the Elite 8 in program history.Clemson (23-11, 11-9 ACC) will again be the underdog, after upsetting both No. 11 New Mexico and No. 3 Baylor last weekend in Memphis.Senior guard Chase Hunter led the way in both the wins over the Lobos and Bears, scoring a season-high and team-high 21 points against New Mexico, before following that up by leading the team in scoring again with 20 points against Baylor. The Tigers defense was outstanding, as well, holding New Mexico to 29% from the field in the opening round, and Baylor to 38.9% in the Round of 32."Obviously really happy to be here," said Clemson head coach Brad Brownell. "Proud of my team and the way that we played last week. I thought we had some terrific performances. Certainly, we'll need one of those this next game against Arizona."Arizona (27-8, 15-5 Pac-12) won their regular season conference championship this season, in the final year of the league's existence. The Wildcats are one of only three teams in the country to rank in the top 10 in KenPom's offensive and defensive efficiency metrics (No. 9 adjusted offensive efficiency, No. 9 adjusted defensive efficiency). They're second in the country in fastbreak points, and third in rebound margin.Thursday night will mark just the fourth all-time meeting between the Tigers and Wildcats. Arizona is 3-0 against Clemson, including a win in the 1989 NCAA Tournament. A win over the No. 2 seed Wildcats would be the highest-seeded team Clemson has ever beaten in the NCAA Tournament.
