Vietnam War veteran’s widow gets a home renovation funded by Columbus non-profit

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — The widow of a Vietnam War veteran is in the process of having her home renovated as a result of a community partnership with a local non-profit.

Annie Woods was married at the age of 21 to Irvin Woods, a Vietnam war veteran who passed away in 1999.

Woods, who has lived in this house since 1983 when she was pregnant, is excited to have her house renovated as the home has only had minor adjustments like paint and installation of ceiling fans.

This renovation will include a new kitchen and new bathroom. The rooms have received new appliances and remodels. Woods told WRBL she is excited to bake her infamous red velvet cake for her family for Easter in her new kitchen.

It’s like a family house. This is where all the nieces and nephews visit me quite often. It’s just a family place you know. Just a close-knit family, this is where they come.

Woods has two daughters and three granddaughters. During the renovation, one of her granddaughters housed her next door to her home. Woods says her grandchildren are excited for the new renovation as well.

This renovation took three days to complete and was made possible through a partnership with the non-profit House of Heroes and Hughston Homes.

WRBL had the chance to speak with Cameron Sizemore, the production manager of Hughston Homes, about the partnership.

The morales have been great. We all get along. The team we have created here at Hughston is just a very tight group and we all just work well together.

WRBL also caught up with Shane Mcguigan, the production manager from the non-profit House of Heroes, who shared the impact of this partnership.

The only reason we are able to do this project is because Hughston Homes stepped up and was able to provide the skill set, the manpower, and the budget of this because it went over our budget a lot.

Mcguigan also told WRBL the impact this project has on his organization – House of Heroes.

“Not only do we give back to the community, but we give back to those who’ve served and gave so much for us to be able to do the things that we’re doing here,” Mcguigan shared.

In the honor ceremony hosted at the home of Annie Woods, she was given a flag that was flown over the capital in honor of her husband Irvin Wood, a Vietnam war veteran.

In an interview with Edgar Hughston, the head of development with Hughston Homes, shared he was honored to work with a team of men that can efficiently and quickly take on a job for good people that need it done.
