Few performers divide their fans as much as Thundercat. None disputes that the double Grammy award-winner is a bass guitar god, or that his albums are works of art. Live, however, he is musical Marmite.

The issue? Supposed self-indulgence. Like Bob Dylan for decades, the Compton-born 39-year-old beloved by Kendrick Lamar, Erykah Badu and Ariana Grande reinvents his songs on stage. Jazz improvisation, his admirers call it. Others arrive hoping to howl along and leave outraged.
