Former SNL star Kevin Nealon a man of many talents

Comedian, artist, author discusses his passions, best SNL moments

Comedian and former SNL cast member Kevin Nealon performs at Da Playground in Maalaea on June 18. In an interview with Maui News freelance writer Jon Woodhouse, Nealon discussed the keys to his stand-up routines, shared the joys of hosting a web series and creating caricatures of his famous friends, and reminisced about his iconic SNL skits inspired by Arnold Schwarzenegger. In his brilliant web series, “Hiking with Kevin,” former “Saturday Night Live” star Kevin Nealon takes celebrities on hikes, with often hilarious encounters.

He asked if Alec Baldwin had an anger management problem, if Marie Osmond falls in love easily and if his buddy Adam Sandler could do a Sandler impression. Other episodes included Jack Black wheezing through the hike, and Owen Wilson jokingly expecting a mob hit on a trail.

“I love hiking and I love being with friends and interesting people,” he explained in an interview for The Maui News last month. “I’ve done over 150 hikes so far in my YouTube series.”

As for whether he’s ever thought about producing the series on Maui, Nealon said, “I think Maui would be the ultimate location and hike for my web series. … There really is nothing more beautiful than the natural coastline.”

Nealon was in town in June to perform at Da Playground in Maalaea as part of his ongoing 2023 comedy tour.

“I love making people laugh,” he explained. “The pleasure I get from that is indescribable. I also enjoy the art of crafting the material. The entire process is such a joyride for me.”

And, bringing his act to Maui is a bonus for him.

“I love Hawaii in general, and Maui is definitely my favorite because I see it as a smorgasbord of the Hawaiian Islands,” he said. “It’s like a sampler of Hawaii. It’s the island I’ve been to the most, with lots of great memories.”

As far as his approach to stand-up, he said, “my comedy is very conversational. Also, I believe it’s important to make the audience feel relaxed. If they know you are confident and in control, it encourages them to laugh more. I’ve been told my material sneaks up on you. I guess that’s what I’m going for.”

A man of many talents, besides his hilarious stand-up routines and web series, Nealon is an acclaimed actor, author and artist.

“I am so lucky to have so many passions,” he said. “Maybe too many. It’s not so much juggling as it is spinning plates. I try to give equal attention, which is sometimes not easy. I am certainly never bored.”

An accomplished artist, in 2022 he published “I Exaggerate: My Brushes With Fame,” featuring impressive caricatures of many famous folks.

“Many of them are my friends,” he noted. “Each one has an accompanying anecdote about my friendship with them.”

Nealon’s paintings have been on exhibit at several art galleries, including the DeRubeis Fine Art gallery in Lahaina on Father’s Day.

Fans will probably warmly remember his time on “Saturday Night Live,” where he was a cast member between 1986 and 1995, and especially his teaming with Dana Carvey in “Pumping Up with Hans and Franz,” a parody of bodybuilding as Arnold Schwarzenegger’s “Austrian cousins” eager to “pump you up.”

“Dana and I were on a comedy tour and one night we watched Arnold on an interview show and we were both so amused by his Austrian accent and confident demeanor,” he recalled. “By the end of our tour, we had the characters set to go. As it got closer to our second season, we hashed out their weightlifting show and their defensive and insecure personalities.”

Was he surprised it became a much-loved SNL classic?

“It’s always a surprise to see what becomes a classic,” he said. “After the tremendous response of our second sketch of them, we knew we were a hit.”

Having Schwarzenegger appear on an SNL episode to berate “his cousins” was comedy gold.

“At first, we thought he wanted to be on the show so he could work us over for making fun of him. Haha! He was a good sport and, of course, took and ran with some of our catchphrases in his campaign for the governor of California,” Nealon said. “I think Dana and I should get at least some credit for that.”
