Mosque opened in 1985

According to its website, Stepney Shahjalal Masjid, in Duckett Street, was formed on the grounds of Shandy Park in 1985.

It was named after Hazrat Shah Jalal Mujarrad al Yemeni (RA) who "migrated to Bangladesh from the Middle East to promote Islamic education and Dawah activities within the Sylhet region of Bangladesh".

There is no suggestion that the stabbing was linked to the mosque at this stage.
