MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The opening weekend of the NCAA Tournament drew to a close Sunday with the final Sweet 16 tickets distributed in a series of battles involving heavyweight squads. No. 1 seed Purdue and No. 4 seed Duke stood out the most, mainly for their dominance as both advanced with relatively easy wins over would-be Cinderella squads.
Purdue throttled No. 8 seed Utah State 106-67 as the Boilermakers continued their redemption tour by capping an authoritative first weekend performance just a year after losing to No. 16 seed FDU in the first round. Duke was similarly impressive in its 93-55 thrashing of No. 12 seed James Madison as freshman guard Jared McCain led the way with 30 points for the Blue Devils.
The day wasn't all just blowouts, however. No. 2 seed Marquette and No. 10 seed Colorado began the day with a thriller as the Golden Eagles squeaked out an 81-77 victory. No. 6 seed Clemson upset No. 3 seed Baylor 72-64 to reach the program's second Sweet 16 of the 21st century. Finally, in what was the most thrilling showdown of the slate, No. 1 seed Houston survived and advanced with a thrilling 100-95 win in overtime over a Texas A&M squad that provided us with a true March Madness moment to prolong its season.
This is always one of the best weekends in sports, and it was no different this year as the emotion and desperation of the NCAA Tournament led to memorable moments and performances.
Shaka Smart, Marquette dance onward
Marquette is headed to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2013 after the No. 2 seed Golden Eagles outlasted No. 10 seed Colorado 81-77 in a game that was virtually a dead heat for the final 17 minutes. It will be the first Sweet 16 appearance since 2011 for third-year Marquette coach Shaka Smart. The former VCU and Texas coach is on his 10th trip to the Big Dance since taking VCU on a historic Final Four run in 2011, but there hadn't been another deep run across his stints with three different schools. This time, Smart's squad will enter the second weekend with a great opportunity to dance even further as Marquette will tangle with No. 11 seed NC State in a South Region semifinal matchup. -- David Cobb
Zach Edey continues shining
Through 54 minutes of playing time in the 2024 NCAA Tournament, Zach Edey has scored 54 points, grabbed 35 rebounds and blocked six shots in two blowout wins for No. 1 seed Purdue. The Boilermakers have only had to use their star sparingly because of how dominant he has been in limited minutes with Edey and Purdue going up at one point by 41 points in the second round Sunday vs. No. 8 seed Utah State. Purdue ducked out of the tourney last year in the first round as a No. 1 seed and has had some earlier-than-expected exits over the last few years, but it has cruised thus far. Edey's statistical dominance all season has somehow elevated as the stakes have ramped up. -- Kyle Boone
UConn playing like the No. 1 overall seed
No. 1 seed UConn's run through the 2024 postseason is beginning to resemble its tear through the 2023 NCAA Tournament. Four of the Huskies' five wins in the Big East and NCAA Tournaments have come by double-digits, including Sunday's 75-58 win over No. 9 seed Northwestern. UConn led by 30 early in the second half before letting off the gas and coasting into the Sweet 16. Tristen Newton paced the Huskies' effort with 20 points and 10 assists. What made the margin of victory so incredible was that UConn made just 3 of 22 attempts from 3-point range. The 13.6% mark was UConn's worst in a game this season. The Huskies did their work near the basket, outscoring Northwestern 52-26 in the paint and holding Wildcats star Boo Buie to nine points on 2 of 15 shooting. – Cobb
