March 26, 2024 - Monterey County Sheriff Deputies officials report that on Sunday March 22, 2024, at about 7:45 A.M., Monterey County Sheriff Deputies served a search warrant on the 600 block of San Juan Grade Road. Deputies had previously been provided with information of activity related to illegal cockfighting at this location. Deputies conducted a follow up investigation and prepared a search warrant which was granted. The Monterey County SPCA along with Monterey County Code Enforcement responded to assist.

During the execution of the search warrant, Sheriff’s deputies were able to locate evidence commonly associated with breeding and training of roosters for illegal cock fighting. Approximately 350 roosters, hens and chicks were seized. All were turned over to the Monterey County SPCA and were scheduled to be euthanized.

73-year-old Jose Francisco Gaitan of Salinas was contacted. Numerous code enforcement violations were discovered in addition to the illegal activity related to cockfighting. A request for charges against Jose Francisco Gaitan will also be forwarded to the Monterey County District Attorney for violation of 597j PC, Possession of Fighting Birds.

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office reminds everyone that cockfighting is illegal in California and is punishable as a misdemeanor or Felony. It is also a federal crime that can be prosecuted under the United States Animal Welfare Act. If you suspect illegal cockfighting is taking place in a known location, please contact law enforcement to report the activity.
