A fire official in Lincoln said Monday that a woman jumped from a burning multifamily home in the Manville section and landed on a mattress.

The woman was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for evaluation.

The second and third floors of the Bouvier Avenue house were engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

"You couldn't stand in front of the building it was so hot," Manville Fire Chief Robert Bradley said.

He said the apartments were extremely crowded with belongings, but stopped short of calling it a hoarding situation until he could observe conditions himself.

Bradley said everyone else in the building got out. Officials said six people were displaced.

The house was condemned. Bradley said the fire burned through the roof, and the porch was unstable and in danger of collapse.

A witness described what he saw when the person jumped.

"You could see her. She was dangling," Greg Wagner, a neighbor, said. "I ended up running back over, helping them. She jumps. We ended up carrying her to safety, well, at least six to eight other guys carried her to safety. We made sure that she was OK.

Bradley said Lincoln police officers also checked on her.

"She was talking to them, but I would imagine she got some pretty serious leg damage bailing out of a third-floor window," Bradley said.

Firefighters from multiple departments responded to the scene.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
