Nick Offerman used his acceptance speech at the 2024 Independent Spirit Awards to address the criticism he received for his role as a queer survivalist in The Last Of Us.

As he collected his award for best supporting performance in a new scripted series, Offerman took a moment to thank HBO for “having the guts” to tell the story of Bill (Offerman) and Frank (Murray Bartlett), two men who have a romantic relationship over the span of 20 years while surviving the zombie apocalypse.

“Thank you so much. I’m astonished to be in this category, which is bananas,” Offerman said at the Independent Spirit Awards. “Thanks to HBO for having the guts to participate in this storytelling tradition that is truly independent. Stories with guts that when homophobic hate comes my way and says, ‘Why did you have to make it a gay story?’ We say, ‘Because you ask questions like that.”

He then added, to much applause from the audience, “It’s not a gay story, it’s a love story, you asshole!”

The episode, titled “Long, Long Time,” received critical acclaim when it aired in 2023, becoming one of the most lauded episodes of the show’s debut season. It also earned Offerman an Emmy award for best guest actor in a drama series.

Production for The Last of Us Season 2 recently began in Vancouver. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey will be reprising their lead roles and Joel and Ellie, while a slate of new stars are expected to join the Season 2 cast, including Kaitlyn Dever, Isabela Merced, and Catherine O’Hara.

The second season is expected to continue following the story set in The Last Of Us Part II, though series creator Craig Mazin has already specified that it may take multiple seasons to tell the sequel’s entire story.

The Last Of Us Season 2 was initially expected to premiere in late 2024, but it may be subject to delays considering last year’s Hollywood strikes.

The Last of Us Season 1 is now streaming on Max.
